Deployment mechanisms for high packing efficiency One-MEter Reflectarray Antenna (OMERA)

While the capabilities of CubeSats have greatly increased in the past years, large, deployable high frequency apertures remain a limitation. The goal of this work is to develop a large 1 meter antenna operating at 35.75 GHz for RADAR applications. A reflectarray design was selected, as the flat panels are compatible with the CubeSat form factor. A center-fed, Cassegrain configuration was selected for the feed, to minimize deployed height. The flat panel configuration and Cassegrain feed allowed the entire 1 meter antenna to be compatible with a 6U bus, leaving a little under 4U of volume for remaining instrument and spacecraft components. Several iterations of the design have been built and tested, with an RF test of a fully deployed assembly being completed most recently. Prior to constructing the flight model, another iteration will need to be built and tested. The goal is to have the antenna flight ready before 2020.

Deployment Testing of Flexible Composite Hinges in Bi-Material Beams

Composites have excellent properties for strength, thermal stability, and weight. However, they are traditionally highly rigid, and when used in deployable structures require hinges bonded to the composite material, which increases complexity and opportunities for failure. Recent research in composites has found by adding an elastomeric soft matrix, often silicone instead of an epoxy, the composite becomes flexible. This work explores the deployment repeatability of silicone matrix composite hinges which join rigid composite beams. The hinges were found to have sub-millimeter deployment repeatability. Also, an interesting creep effect was discovered, that a hinges deployment error would decrease with time.

Recent research in composites has found by adding an elastomeric soft matrix, often silicone instead of an epoxy, the composite becomes flexible. This work explores the deployment repeatability of silicone matrix composite hinges which join rigid composite beams. The hinges were found to have sub-millimeter linear deployment repeatability, and sub-degree angular deployment repeatability. Also, an interesting relaxation effect was discovered, as a hinges deployment error would decrease with time.

Ka-Band Parabolic Deployable Antenna (KaPDA) Enabling High Speed Data Communication for CubeSats

CubeSats are at a very exciting point as their mission capabilities and launch opportunities are increasing. But as instruments become more advanced and operational distances between CubeSats and earth increase communication data rate becomes a mission-limiting factor. Improving data rate has become critical enough for NASA to sponsor the Cube Quest Centennial Challenge when: one of the key metrics is transmitting as much data as possible from the moon and beyond Currently, many CubeSats communicate on UHF bands and those that have high data rate abilities use S-band or X-band patch antennas. The CubeSat Aneas, which was launched in September 2012, pushed the envelope with a half-meter S-band dish which could achieve 100x the data rate of patch antennas. A half-meter parabolic antenna operating at Ka-band would increase data rates by over 100x that of the AMOS antenM and 10,000 that of X-band patch antennas.
