Isolation of a californium(II) crown–ether complex

The actinides, from californium to nobelium (Z = 98–102), are known to have an accessible +2 oxidation state. Understanding the origin of this chemical behaviour requires characterizing Cf II materials, but investigations are hampered by the fact that they have remained dificult to isolate. This partly arises from the intrinsic challenges of manipulating this unstable element, as well as a lack of suitable reductants that do not reduce Cf III to Cf°. Here we show that a Cf II crown–ether complex, Cf(18-crown-6)I 2 , can be prepared using an Al/Hg amalgam as a reductant. Spectroscopic evidence shows that Cf III can be quantitatively reduced to Cf II , and rapid radiolytic re-oxidation in solution yields co-crystallized mixtures of Cf II and Cf III complexes without the Al/Hg amalgam. Furthermore, quantum-chemical calculations show that the Cf– ligand interactions are highly ionic and that 5f/6d mixing is absent, resulting in weak 5f→5f transitions and an absorption spectrum dominated by 5f→6d transitions.

Syntheses and Characterization of Tetrazolate-Based Lanthanide Compounds and Selective Crystallization Separation of Neodymium and Dysprosium

Selective crystallization offers new opportunities for separating neodymium and dysprosium, which are considerably important in permanent magnets. Two water-soluble nitrogen-rich tetrazolate-based ligands, dtp 2– (H 2 dtp = 2,3-di-1H-tetrazol-5-ylpyrazine) and H 2 ibt – [H 3 ibt = 4,5-bis(tetrazol-5-yl)imidazole], allow the separation of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ through selective crystallization. The reactions of Ln 3+ with the ligand Na 2 (dtp)·2H 2 O lead to two distinct phases, Na[Ln(dtp)(H 2 O) 8 ](dtp)·H 2 O (Lndtp1; Ln = La–Pr) and [Ln(H 2 O) 8 ](Hdtp)(dtp)·H 2 O (Lndtp2; Ln = Nd and Sm–Lu). Three different compound types, [Ln(H 2 ibt) 2 (H 2 O) 6 ](H 2 ibt)·3(H 2 O) (Lnibt1; Ln = La or Ce), [Ln(H 2 ibt)(H 2 O) 7 ](H 2 ibt) 2 ·4(H 2 O) (Lnibt2; Ln = Pr or Nd), and [Ln(Hibt)(H 2 ibt)(H 2 O) 4 ]·4+x(H 2 O) (Lnibt3; Ln = Sm–Lu), are obtained from reacting Ln 3+ and Na(H 2 ibt)·3(H 2 O). Two different phases are observed for Nd(Lnibt2) and Dy(Lnibt3) in the system of H 2 ibt – , which leads to crystallization-based separation of Nd/Dy with a separation factor of 32 ± 0.7, 10 times higher than that of dtp 2– , and a short separation time of 20 s (1 day for dtp 2– ). As a result, the higher performance of H 2 ibt – compared to that of dtp2– provides guidance for the rational design of water-soluble tetrazolate-derived ligands for selective crystallization.

Selective Crystallization for Green Separations of Lanthanides Using 5-(Pyrimidyl)Tetrazolate

In an effort to develop facile, low-cost, and environmentally benign separations of lanthanides, the coordination chemistry and selective crystallization of Ln 3+ cations with the water-soluble ligand 5-(pyrimidyl)tetrazolate (pmtz) have been investigated. The wide range of coordination modes of pmtz allows for discrimination between these cations, and five distinct compound types can be prepared that are dependent on the lanthanide employed. La 3+ leads to the formation of [La(pmtz) 2 (H 2 O) 6 ]Cl (S1). [Ln(pmtz) 3 (H 2 O) 3 ]·(3+n)H 2 O is obtained with Ce 3+ and Pr 3+ (S2). Ce 3+ can also form [(Ce(pmtz) 2 (H 2 O) 3 ) 2 (μ-pmtz)](pmtz)·11H 2 O (S3). [(Ln(pmtz) 2 (H 2 O) 3 ) 2 (μ-pmtz)] 2 (pmtz) 2 ·14H 2 O (S4) is formed with Nd 3+ and Sm 3+ . Here, the smaller Ln 3+ cations, Dy 3+ to Lu 3+ , all yield [Ln(H 2 O) 8 ](pmtz) 3 ·3H 2 O (S5). This selective crystallization of Ln 3+ cations based primarily on ionic radii provides a simple method for achieving group separations.

Synthesis, characterization, and high-pressure studies of a 3D berkelium( III ) carboxylate framework material

Here, a berkelium(III) mellitate, Bk 2 [C 6 (CO 2 ) 6 ](H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O, was synthesized and rapidly crystallized by reacting mellitic acid, C 6 (CO 2 H) 6 , and BkBr 3 ·nH 2 O in an aqueous medium. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the compound crystallizes as a three-dimensional framework isostructural with Pu(III), Am(III), and Cm(III) mellitates. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic studies as a function of pressure were performed using a diamond anvil cell and show that the 5f → 5f transitions of Bk 3+ display enhanced hypsochromic shifting when compared to other An(III) mellitates.
