Orbital-induced crossover of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase into Abrikosov-like states.

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state can emerge in superconductors for which the orbital critical field exceeds the Pauli limit. Here, we present angular-resolved specific-heat data of the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor ??-(ET)2Cu(NCS )2 , with a focus on high fields in the regime of the FFLO transition. For an increasing out-of-plane tilt of the applied magnetic field, which leads to an increase of orbital contributions, we found that the nature of the superconducting transition changes from second to first order and that a further transition appears within the high-field superconducting phase. However, the superconducting state above the Pauli limit is stable for field tilt of several degrees. Since any finite perpendicular component of the magnetic field necessarily leads to quantization of the orbital motion, the resulting vortex lattice states compete with the modulated order parameter of the FFLO state leading to complex high-field superconducting phases. By solving the linearized self-consistency equation within weak-coupling BCS theory, we show that our results are clear experimental evidence of an orbital-induced transformation of the FFLO order parameter into Abrikosov-like states of higher Landau levels.

Charge ordering and structural transition in the new organic conductor {delta}'-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}CF{sub 3}CF{sub 2}SO{sub 3}.

We report structural, transport, and optical properties and electronic structure calculations of the delta'-(BEDT-TTF) 2CF3CF2SO3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene) organic conductor that has been synthesized by electrocrystallization. Electronic structure calculations demonstrate the quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surfaces of the compound, while the optical spectra are characteristic for a dimer-Mott insulator. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements reveal the structural phase transition at 200 K from the ambient-temperature monoclinic P2(1)/m phase to the low-temperature orthorhombic Pca2(1) phase, while the resistivity measurements clearly show the first order semiconductor-semiconductor transition at the same temperature. This transition is accompanied by charge-ordering as it is confirmed by splitting of charge-sensitive vibrational modes observed in the Raman and infrared spectra. The horizontal stripe charge-order pattern is suggested based on the crystal structure, band structure calculations, and optical spectra.

Fermi Surface Structure and Isotropic Stability of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phase in Layered Organic Superconductor β''-(BEDT-TTF) 2 SF 5 CH 2 CF 2 SO 3

The Fermi surface structure of a layered organic superconductor β''-(BEDT-TTF) 2 SF 5 CH 2 CF 2 SO 3 was determined by angular-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations measurements and band-structure calculations. This salt was found to have two small pockets with the same area: a deformed square hole pocket and an elliptic electron pocket. Characteristic corrugations in the field dependence of the interlayer resistance in the superconducting phase were observed at any in-plane field directions. The features were ascribed to the commensurability (CM) effect between the Josephson vortex lattice and the periodic nodal structure of the superconducting gap in the Fulde–Ferrell–Larkin–Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. The CM effect was observed in a similar field region for various in-plane field directions, in spite of the anisotropic nature of the Fermi surface. The results clearly showed that the FFLO phase stability is insensitive to the in-plane field directions.

Deformed waveshape of quantum oscillation in magnetocaloric effect for layered organic superconductor.

Magnetocaloric effect for a layered organic superconductor beta ''-(BEDT-TTF)(2)SF5CH2CF2SO3 has been investigated. At low magnetic fields, a sinusoidal quantum oscillation, arising from a closed Fermi surface, is observed. As the field increases, the waveshape of the oscillation is strongly deformed and then sharp peaks emerge. The total energy including the Landau quantized states and the elastic energy of the leads holding the sample is calculated as a function of field strength and angle, and the minimum total energy, which determines the sample angle, is obtained as a function of field. The calculated results clarify that the deformation of the quantum oscillation is ascribed to a tilting effect of the sample by the magnetic torque.

Gapped magnetic ground state in quantum spin liquid candidate {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}Cu{sub 2}(CN){sub 3}.

Geometrical frustration, quantum entanglement, and disorder may prevent long-range ordering of localized spins with strong exchange interactions, resulting in an exotic state of matter. kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu-2(CN)(3) is considered the prime candidate for this elusive quantum spin liquid state, but its ground-state properties remain puzzling. We present a multifrequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study down to millikelvin temperatures, revealing a rapid drop of the spin susceptibility at 6 kelvin. This opening of a spin gap, accompanied by structural modifications, is consistent with the formation of a valence bond solid ground state. We identify an impurity contribution to the ESR response that becomes dominant when the intrinsic spins form singlets. Probing the electrons directly manifests the pivotal role of defects for the low-energy properties of quantum spin systems without magnetic order.

Two-Dimensional Molecular Charge Density Waves in Single-Layer-Thick Islands of a Dirac Fermion System

Charge density waves have been intensely studied in inorganic materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides however its counterpart in organic materials has yet to be explored in detail. Here we report the finding of a robust two dimensional charge density waves in molecular layers formed by α-(BEDT-TTF) 2 -I 3 on a Ag(111) surface. Low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy images of a multi-layer thick α-(BEDT-TTF) 2 -I 3 on Ag(111) substrate reveal coexistence of 5a0 x 5a0 and √31 a0 x √31 a0 R9° charge density wave patterns commensurate with the underlying molecular lattice at 80 K. Both charge density wave patterns remain in nano-size molecular islands with just a single constituent molecular-layer thickness at 80 K and 5 K. Local tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal the variation of the gap from 244 meV to 288 meV between the maximum and minimum charge density wave locations. Density functional theory calculations further confirm a vertical positioning of BEDT-TTF molecules in the molecular layer. While the observed charge density wave patterns are stable for the defect sites, they can be reversely switched for one molecular lattice site by means of inelastic tunnelling electron energy transfer with the electron energies exceeding 400 meV using a scanning tunneling microscope manipulation scheme.
