Reanalysis of the π›½βˆ’ $\overline{v}$ 𝑒 Angular Correlation Measurement from the aSPECT Experiment with New Constraints on Fierz Interference

On the basis of revisions of some of the systematic errors, we reanalyzed the electron-antineutrino angular correlation (π‘Ž coefficient) in free neutron decay inferred from the recoil energy spectrum of the protons which are detected in 4β’πœ‹ by the aSPECT spectrometer. With π‘Ž=βˆ’0.104 02⁒(82), the new value differs only marginally from the one published in 2020. Here, the experiment also has sensitivity to 𝑏, the Fierz interference term. From a correlated (𝑏,π‘Ž) fit to the proton recoil spectrum, we derive a limit of 𝑏 =βˆ’0.0098⁒(193) which translates into a somewhat improved 90% confidence interval region of βˆ’0.041 ≀ 𝑏 ≀ 0.022 on this hypothetical term. Tighter constraints on 𝑏 can be set from a combined analysis of the PERKEO III (𝛽 asymmetry) and aSPECT measurement which suggests a finite value of 𝑏 with 𝑏 (𝑐) =βˆ’0.0181 Β± 0.0065 deviating by 2.82⁒𝜎 from the standard model.

Improved determination of the π›½βˆ’β€Ύβ€Ύπœˆπ‘’ angular correlation coefficient π‘Ž in free neutron decay with the π‘Žβ’SPECT spectrometer

We report on a precise measurement of the electron-antineutrino angular correlation (π‘Ž coefficient) in free neutron beta decay from the π‘Žβ’SPECT experiment. The π‘Ž coefficient is inferred from the recoil energy spectrum of the protons which are detected in 4β’πœ‹ by the π‘Žβ’SPECT spectrometer using magnetic adiabatic collimation with an electrostatic filter. Data are presented from a 100-day run at the Institut Laue Langevin in 2013. The sources of systematic errors are considered and included in the final result. We obtain π‘Ž=βˆ’0.10430⁒(84) which is the most precise measurement of the neutron π‘Ž coefficient to date. From this, the ratio of axial vector to vector coupling constants is derived giving |πœ†|=1.2677⁒(28).

Balloon-borne measurements of the ultraviolet flux in the Arctic stratosphere during winter

Filter radiometers sensitive from 280 to 320 nm and from 280 to 400 nm, respectively, were used for measurements of the actinic flux in the stratosphere. Since the instruments are calibrated for absolute spectral sensitivity the data can be compared with model calculations of the actinic flux. Data were obtained during seven balloon flights during the European Arctic Stratospheric Ozone Experiment (EASOE).
