Reduced-Gravity Measurements of the Effect of Oxygen on Properties of Zirconium

The influence of oxygen on the thermophysical properties of zirconium is being investigated using MSL-EML (Material Science Laboratory - Electromagnetic Levitator) on ISS (International Space Station) in collaboration with NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), and DLR (German Aerospace Center). Zirconium samples with different oxygen concentrations will be put into multiple melt cycles, during which the density, viscosity, surface tension, heat capacity, and electric conductivity will be measured at various undercooled temperatures. The facility check-up of MSL-EML and the first set of melting experiments have been successfully performed in 2015. The first zirconium sample will be tested near the end of 2015. As part of ground support activities, the thermophysical properties of zirconium and ZrO were measured using a ground-based electrostatic levitator located at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. The influence of oxygen on the measured surface tension was evaluated. The results of this research will serve as reference data for those measured in ISS.

2MASS extended sources in the zone of avoidance

A new high-resolution near-infrared mapping effort, the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), is now underway and will provide a complete census of galaxies as faint as 13.5 mag (3 mJy) at 2.2 mu m for most of the sky, and similar to 12.1 mag (10 mJy) for regions veiled by the Milky Way.

Operational Implementation of a 2-Hour Prebreathe Protocol for International Space Station

Procedures, equipment, and analytical techniques were developed to implement the ground tested 2-hour protocol in-flight operations. The methods are: 1) The flight protocol incorporates additional safety margin over the ground tested protocol. This includes up to 20 min of additional time on enriched O2 during suit purge and pressure check, increased duration of extravehicular activity (EVA) preparation exercise during O2 prebreathing (up to 90 min vs; the tested 24 min), and reduced rates of depressurization. The ground test observations were combined with model projections of the conservative measures (using statistical models from Duke University and NASA JSQ to bound the risk of Type I and Type II decompression sickness (DCS). 2) An inflight exercise device using the in-flight ergometer and elastic tubes for upper body exercise was developed to replicate the dual cycle exercise in the ground trials. 3) A new in-flight breathing system was developed and man-tested. 4) A process to monitor inflight experience with the protocol, including the use of an in-suit Doppler bubble monitor when available, was developed. The results are: 1) The model projections of the conservative factors of the operational protocol were shown to reduce the risk of DCS to levels consistent with the observations of no DCS to date in the shuttle program. 2) Cross over trials of the dual cycle ergometer used in ground tests and the in-flight exercise system verified that02consumption and the % division of work between upper and lower body was not significantly different at the p= 0.05 level. 3) The in-flight breathing system was demonstrated to support work rates generating 75% O2(max) in 95 percentile subjects. 4) An in-flight monitoring plan with acceptance criteria was put in place for the 2-hour prebreathe protocol. And the conclusions are: The 2-hour protocol has been approved for flight, and all implementation efforts are in place to allow use of the protocol as early as flight ISS 7A, now scheduled in November of 2000.

2MASS Extended Source Catalog: Overview and Algorithms

The 2 Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS)will observe over one-million galaxies and extended Galactic sources covering the entire sky at wavelenghts between 1 and 2 m. Most of these galaxies, from 70 to 80%, will be newly catalogued objetcs.

Milky Way Unveiled to Reveal a Host of New Galaxies

This census has already discovered nearby galaxies previously hidden behind our Galaxy, and will allow delineation of large-scale structures in the distribution of galaxies across the whole sky.

An Experimental Simulation of Flap Flow on Multielement Airfoils at High Reynolds Number

The design of the high lift system has a major impact on the performance of an aircraft yet our understanding of the physics of this flow is still weak. Flow features include interactions between the wakes shed from the upstream elements and the pressure gradients and boundary layers of the downstream elements. Interaction of the turbulent wake of the main element and the flap can cause (1) separation of the flap boundary layer or (2) 'bursting' of the main airfoil wake. Although the first factor is at least partially understood, even the qualitative aspects of (2) remain to be determined. In order to study these phenomena at Reynolds numbers approaching those of flight, a thick high Reynolds number wake is created using a 24 foot flat plate in the long rectangular test section of a 4 ft. by 6 ft subsonic wind tunnel. The design and construction of this test section, plate, and accompanying flap is described. Results obtained in a quarter-scale model were used for design purposes and are also described. Construction of the full scale facility is complete and preliminary results are presented.
