Spacehab debut: Eureca retrieval - STS-57 launch

A review is presented of the STS-57 mission. The events leading up to launch are reviewed in some detail, with emphasis on the handling of the payload. A day-by-day recounting of the mission is given, including the activities in the Spacehab module and the retrieval of the Eureca satellite.

NASA's 'Mission to Planet Earth' begins with launch of UARS

The deployment of NASA's Upper Atmospher Research Satellite (UARS) is described in terms of the Shuttle flight and the expected contributions of the UARS to the 'Mission to Planet Earth'. The launch and daily activities of the Shuttle flight are described including microgravity-related materials experiments and the assembling of model space structures. The release of the UARS occurred without difficulty on the third day of the spaceflight, and experiments conducted included protein-crystal growth, middeck zero-gravity dynamics, rodent-physiology tests, cosmic radiation monitoring, and polymer-membrane processing. Millions of bytes of data resulted from the experiments conducted in space, and the UARS is expected to yield important data for the study of the global climate. The spaceflight culminated with the first nighttime landing at the Kennedy Space Center.

Life sciences get important new data from Spacelab mission. III

An investigation of the effects of weightlessness on the human body is reported that was conducted on a flight of the Space Shuttle Columbia. Experiments are described regarding zero-gravity effects on the human perception of balance, the growth of lymphocytes, and general life-sciences examinations of body mass, body fluid, pulmonary parameters, and echocardiograph imaging. Specific attention is given to the day-to-day operations of the mission, and particular emphasis is given to the study of rodents and jellyfish reacting to microgravity.

Operational support considerations in Space Shuttle prelaunch processing

This paper presents an overview of operational support for Space Shuttle payload processing at the John F. Kennedy Space Center. The paper begins with a discussion of the Shuttle payload processing operation itself. It discusses the major organizational roles and describes the two major classes of payload operations: Spacelab mission payload and vertically-installed payload operations. The paper continues by describing the Launch Site Support Team and the Payload Processing Test Team. Specific areas of operational support are then identified including security and access, training, transport and handling, documentation and scheduling. Specific references for further investigatgion are included.

Space Shuttle planetary payload launch site operations

This paper examines the experiences of recent actual planetary payload procesing flows. The emphasis is on the processing of the Galileo spacecraft; however, the paper also addresses the Magellan and Ulysses programs to a lesser extent. An overview of the payload processing activity at the Kennedy Space Center is provided. A 'case study' narrative approach is applied to the Space Shuttle flight STS-34 Galileo processing, and some recommendations based on these operations are presented.

Launch site payload test configurations for Space Shuttle scientific payloads

This paper provides an overview of the test configurations which are utilized in prelaunch testing at the John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) for those scientific payloads which are flown in the National Space Transportation System (NSTS) Space Shuttle. A generalized view of the payload prelaunch processing is provided and the major types of payload configurations are described. The majority of the prelaunch test activity involves the verification of experiment functions, compatibility of experiment-to-carrier interfaces and payload-to-orbiter interfaces. The Shuttle's avionics system is presented as it relates to payloads. The testing of Spacelab experiments and the experiment-to-Spacelab compatibility verification is described as is the test activity for partial payloads and their experiments. Test operations which involve simulated orbiter interface verification and actual payload-to-orbiter testing are discussed. An overview of the Space Station payload processing concept is presented.

Launch site payload ground support factors in Space Shuttle launch operations

This paper addresses several of the major factors in support of the Space Shuttle payload ground processing operations at the launch site. In particular, the factors of payload facility and transportation capabilities are addressed. The paper begins with an overview of payload ground processing. It discusses the specific facilities which support payload operations and outlines their roles in the activity. The transportation elements which are utilized at the launch site are then discussed. The paper concludes with a number of issues and concerns which impact the support of Shuttle payload ground processing.

The influence of the launch site operational environment on Space Shuttle scientific payloads

The effects of prelaunch assembly, testing, and integration activities on the scientific payload at the KSC are examined. The functions of the Shuttle and payload organizations of the KSC are discussed. The processing of the various types of pyaloads, and the amount of access to the payload during processing and after landing are described. The KSC facility contains: an Operations and Checkout Building, a Vertical Processing Facility, Cargo Integration and Test Equipment, an Orbiter Processing Facility, a Payload Changeout Room, payload transportation equipment, and Shuttle launch pads.
