Planetary exploration - Earth's new horizon /12th von Karman Lecture/

The article gives an account of the history of unmanned exploration of the planets of the solar system, including both earthbound exploration and exploration with spacecraft. Examples of images of the Martian surface are presented along with images obtained in Jupiter and Mercury flybys. Data are presented on the growth of US launch vehicle performance capability, navigation performance, and planetary data rate capability. Basic information regarding the nature of the scientific experiments aboard the Pioneer and Viking spacecraft is given. A case is put forward for the ongoing exploration of the planets as a worthwhile endeavor for man.

Planetary exploration - Earth's new horizon /Twelfth von Karman Lecture/

Planetary exploration is examined in terms of the interaction of technological growth with scientific progress and the intangibles associated with exploring the unknown. The field is limited to unmanned exploration of the planets and their satellites. A descriptive model of the endeavor, its activities and achievements in the past decade, a characterization of the current state of the art, and a look at some of the planetary mission opportunities for the next decade are presented. A case is made for the value to civilization of ongoing planetary exploration. The pioneering U.S. planetary explorers, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter, are discussed in the second part of the work. Launch velocity, navigation, the remote system, the earth base, and management technology are considered in the third part. Authorized near-term U.S. planetary projects and opportunities of the next decade are described in the last section.

The Mariner Jupiter/Saturn 1977 mission

A dual flyby mission to the planets and satellite systems of Jupiter and Saturn is being planned for Fall 1977 launch. Two Mariner spacecraft, fully attitude-stabilized and carrying about 90 kg of instruments to support some eleven experiments, will make interplanetary measurements for a minimum of about four years. They will spend several weeks investigating the planets and several of their satellites at close range, using TV cameras, ultraviolet and infrared spectrometers, and a variety of other scanning instruments, field and particle sensors, and radio devices. The mission and equipment designs are described in terms of the integrated plan for a thorough and coordinated scientific exploration of the two planetary systems.

Management and design of long-life systems; Proceedings of the Symposium, Denver, Colo., April 24-26, 1973

The long life of Pioneer interplanetary spacecraft is considered along with a general accelerated methodology for long-life mechanical components, dependable long-lived household appliances, and the design and development philosophy to achieve reliability and long life in large turbine generators. Other topics discussed include an integrated management approach to long life in space, artificial heart reliability factors, and architectural concepts and redundancy techniques in fault-tolerant computers. Individual items are announced in this issue.

The 1969 Mariner view of Mars.

Summary of the 1969 Mariner mission, with emphasis on the planetary encounter and with discussion of the various scientific experiments conducted. Attention is also given to the results as they have been analyzed to date in terms of what they can tell about the atmosphere, surface, and other aspects of Mars. The mission concentrated on obtaining information that would set the basis for experiments on future missions, particularly those relevant to the search for extraterrestrial life. Details of the experimental apparatus are given.
