Magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet KYbSe 2

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a state of matter characterized by fractionalized quasiparticle excitations, quantum entanglement, and a lack of long-range magnetic order. However, QSLs have evaded definitive experimental observation. Several Yb 3+ -based triangular lattice antiferromagnets with effective 𝑆 = $\frac{1}{2}$ have been suggested to stabilize the QSL state as the ground state. Here, in this work, we build a comprehensive magnetic temperature phase diagram of a high-quality single crystalline KYbSe 2 via heat capacity and magnetocaloric effect down to 30 mK with magnetic field applied along the 𝑎 axis. At zero magnetic field, we observe the magnetic long-range order at 𝑇 N =0.29 K entering 120 degrees ordered state in heat capacity, consistent with neutron scattering studies. Analysis of the low-temperature (𝑇) specific heat (𝐶) at zero magnetic field indicates linear 𝑇 dependence of 𝐶/𝑇 and a broad hump of 𝐶/𝑇 in the proximate QSL region above 𝑇 N . By applying magnetic field, we observe the up-up-down phase with 1/3 magnetization plateau and oblique phases, in addition to two new phases. These observations strongly indicate that while KYbSe 2 closely exhibits characteristics resembling an ideal triangular lattice, deviations may exist, such as the effect of the next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction, calling for careful consideration for spin Hamiltonian modeling. Further investigations into tuning parameters, such as chemical pressure, could potentially induce an intriguing QSL phase in the material.

Nonlinear magnons and exchange Hamiltonians of the delafossite proximate quantum spin liquid candidates KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are theoretical states of matter with long-range entanglement and exotic quasiparticles. However, they generally elude quantitative theory, rendering their underlying phases mysterious and hampering efforts to identify experimental QSL states. Here we study triangular-lattice resonating-valence-bond QSL candidate materials KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 . We measure the magnon modes in their 1/3 plateau phase, where quantitative theory is tractable, using inelastic neutron scattering and fit them using nonlinear spin wave theory. We also fit the KYbSe 2 heat capacity using high-temperature series expansion. Both KYbSe 2 fits yield the same magnetic Hamiltonian to within uncertainty, confirming previous estimates and showing the Heisenberg ratio J 2 / J 1 to be an accurate model for these materials. Most importantly, comparing KYbSe 2 and NaYbSe 2 shows that the smaller A -site Na + ion has a larger J 2 / J 1 ratio. However, hydrostatic pressure applied to KYbSe 2 increases the ordering temperature (a result consistent with density functional theory calculations), indicating that pressure decreases J 2 / J 1 . In conclusion, these results show how the periodic table and hydrostatic pressure can tune the A YbSe 2 materials in a controlled way.

Proximate spin liquid and fractionalization in the triangular antiferromagnet KYbSe 2

The Heisenberg triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid and its phase transitions to nearby magnetic orders have received much theoretical attention, but clear experimental manifestations of these states are rare. Here we demonstrate that a spin-half delafossite material, namely, KYbSe 2 , shows close proximity to the triangular-lattice Heisenberg quantum spin liquid. Using neutron scattering, we identify a diffuse continuum with a sharp lower bound within the measured spectra. Applying entanglement witnesses to the data indicates multipartite entanglement spread between its neighbours, and an analysis of its magnetic-exchange couplings reveals close proximity to the theoretical quantum spin-liquid phase. The key features of the data are reproduced by Schwinger boson theory and tensor network calculations with a substantial next-nearest-neighbour coupling. The strength of the dynamical structure factor at the Brillouin-zone K point shows a scaling collapse down to 0.3 K, indicating the existence of a second-order quantum phase transition. Finally, comparing this with previous theoretical work suggests that the proximate phase at a larger next-nearest-neighbour coupling is a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid, resolving a long-debated issue. Multiband effects on the upper critical field angular dependence of 122-family iron pnictide superconductors

Detailed measurements of the in-plane resistivity were performed in a high-quality Ba(Fe 1-x Co x ) 2 As 2 (x=0.065) single crystal, in magnetic fields up to 9 T and with different orientations θ relative to the crystal c axis. A significant ρ(T) H,θ rounding is observed just above the superconducting critical temperature T c due to Cooper pairs created by superconducting fluctuations. These data are analyzed in terms of a generalization of the Aslamazov-Larkin approach, that extends its applicability to high reduced-temperatures and magnetic fields. This method allows us to carry out a criterion-independent determination of the angular dependence of the upper critical field, H c2 (θ). In spite of the relatively small anisotropy of this compound, it is found that H c2 (θ) presents a significant deviation from the single-band 3D anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (3D-aGL) approach, particularly for large θ (typically above ~60o). These results are interpreted in terms of the multiband nature of these materials, in contrast with other proposals for similar H c2 (θ) anomalies. Our results are also consistent with an effective anisotropy factor almost temperature independent near T c , a result that differs from the ones obtained by using a single-band model.

Coupling of fully symmetric As phonon to magnetism in Ba(Fe 1-x Au x ) 2 As 2

In this work, we study the coupling of the fully symmetric vibration mode of arsenic atoms to magnetism in a Ba ( Fe 1 - x Au x ) 2 As 2 system by polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy and neutron diffraction. In this system, there are two phase transitions: a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition at temperature T S and a magnetic phase transition into collinear spin-density wave (SDW) state at temperature T N ( ≤ T S ). T S and T N almost coincide in the pristine compound, whereas they differ by as much as 8 K for compounds with dilute gold substitution for iron. Raman coupling to the A g (As) phonon is forbidden for the X Y scattering geometry in the tetragonal phase above T S , whereas it becomes allowed in the orthorhombic phase below T S : The emerging mode's intensity indicates the lattice orthorhombicity. Furthermore, we find that upon cooling below T S , first, weak A g (As) phonon mode intensity appears in the X Y scattering geometry spectra; however, the mode's intensity is significantly enhanced in the magnetic phase below T N . The A g (As) phonon also shows an asymmetric line shape below T N and an anomalous linewidth broadening upon Au doping. We describe the anomalous behavior of the A g (As) mode in the X Y scattering geometry using a Fano model involving the A g (As) phonon interacting with the B 2 g ( D 4 h )-symmetry-like electron-hole continuum. We conclude that the temperature dependence of light coupling amplitude to the A g (As) phonon follows the evolution of the magnetic order parameter M ( T ) . We propose that the intensity enhancement of the A g (As) phonon in the X Y scattering geometry below T N is due to electronic anisotropy induced by the collinear SDW order parameter.
