Partons as unique ground states of quantum Hall parent Hamiltonians: The case of Fibonacci anyons

We present microscopic, multiple Landau level, (frustration-free and positive semi-definite) parent Hamiltonians whose ground states, realizing different quantum Hall fluids, are parton-like and whose excitations display either Abelian or non-Abelian braiding statistics. We prove ground state energy monotonicity theorems for systems with different particle numbers in multiple Landau levels, demonstrate S-duality in the case of toroidal geometry, and establish complete sets of zero modes of special Hamiltonians stabilizing parton-like states, specifically at filling factor \nu=2/3 ν = 2 / 3 . The emergent Entangled Pauli Principle (EPP), introduced in [Phys. Rev. B 98, 161118(R) (2018)] and which defines the “DNA” of the quantum Hall fluid, is behind the exact determination of the topological characteristics of the fluid, including charge and braiding statistics of excitations, and effective edge theory descriptions. When the closed-shell condition is satisfied, the densest (i.e., the highest density and lowest total angular momentum) zero-energy mode is a unique parton state. We conjecture that parton-like states generally span the subspace of many-body wave functions with the two-body M M -clustering property within any given number of Landau levels, that is, wave functions with M M th-order coincidence plane zeroes and both holomorphic and anti-holomorphic dependence on variables. General arguments are supplemented by rigorous considerations for the M=3 M = 3 case of fermions in four Landau levels. For this case, we establish that the zero mode counting can be done by enumerating certain patterns consistent with an underlying EPP. We apply the coherent state approach of [Phys. Rev. X 1, 021015 (2011)] to show that the elementary (localized) bulk excitations are Fibonacci anyons. This demonstrates that the DNA associated with fractional quantum Hall states encodes all universal properties. Specifically, for parton-like states, we establish a link with tensor network structures of finite bond dimension that emerge via root level entanglement.

Interlayer correlated fractional quantum Hall state in the ν = 4 / 5 bilayer system

We perform exact diagonalization studies for fractional quantum Hall states at filling factor 4/5 in a bilayer system, on a torus with various aspect ratios and angles. In this work we find that in the absence of tunneling, two weakly coupled 2/5 layers undergo a phase transition into an interlayer-correlated regime, which is also Abelian with the fivefold degeneracy on the torus. In the limit of zero layer separation, this phase becomes a singlet in the pseudospin variable describing the layer degree of freedom. By studying the Chern-number matrix, we show that the K matrix describing the interlayer-correlated regime requires a matrix dimension larger than two and this regime is in particular not described by a Halperin state. A detailed analysis of possible 4 × 4 K matrices having the requisite symmetries and quantum numbers shows that there is only one equivalence class of such matrices. A model wave function representing this universality class is constructed. The role of separate particle number conservation in both layers is discussed, and it is argued that this additional symmetry allows for the further distinction of two different symmetry-protected Abelian phases in the interlayer correlated regime. Interlayer tunneling breaks this symmetry and can drive the system into a single-layer regime when strong enough. A qualitative phase diagram in the tunneling-layer separation parameter space is proposed based on our numerical results.

Composite fermions in Fock space: Operator algebra, recursion relations, and order parameters

We develop recursion relations, in particle number, for all (unprojected) Jain composite fermion (CF) wave functions. These recursions generalize a similar recursion originally written down by Read for Laughlin states, in mixed first-second quantized notation. In contrast, our approach is purely second-quantized, giving rise to an algebraic, “pure guiding center” definition of CF states that de-emphasizes first quantized many-body wave functions. Key to the construction is a second-quantized representation of the flux attachment operator that maps any given fermion state to its CF counterpart. An algebra of generators of edge excitations is identified. In particular, in those cases where a well-studied parent Hamiltonian exists, its properties can be entirely understood in the present framework, and the identification of edge state generators can be understood as an instance of “microscopic bosonization.” Here, the intimate connection of Read's original recursion with “nonlocal order parameters” generalizes to the present situation, and we are able to give explicit second-quantized formulas for nonlocal order parameters associated with CF states.
