Mars Millenium Project Materials
Human beings have long been fascinated with the stars, planets and galaxies within the universe, beyond Earth, sometimes called our Blue Planet. Today we have seen that the impossible has come within reach, the difficult has become reality.
A Mercury Frequency Standard Engineering Prototype for the NASA Deep Space Network
An engineering prototype linear ion trap frequency standar (LITS-4) using (sup 199)Hg+ is operational and currently under test for NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN). The DSN requires high stability and reliability with continuous operation.
Progress Toward the Development of a Ytterbium Ion Standard
A ytterbium ion standard is currently under development at JPL for both ground and space applications.
Efficient Quenching of Population Trapping in Excited Yb superscript +
The efficiency of various buffer gases in quenching the population trapping states of laser excited ytterbium ions is described. Highly efficient in quenching the population of the trapping states, N subscript 2 has been identified as the most suitable buffer gas to use with ytterbium for the development i=of a trapped ion microwave frequency standard.
