Enhancing Distribution System Resiliency Using Grid-Forming Fuel Cell Inverter: Preprint

Legacy inverters interfacing distributed energy re-sources are traditionally grid-following (GFL) in nature. GFL assets typically follow real power and reactive power set points. Recently, inverters with grid-forming (GFM) capability are gaining attention as GFM assets can increase the resiliency of the distribution system under stressed conditions. These GFM inverters can use photovoltaics, batteries, or fuel cells as their energy source. In this paper, we present information on inverters interfacing fuel cell assets, specifically with GFM capability. By introducing a fuel cell powered GFM coupled with hydrogen production and storage, the GFM can continuously provide GFM activities during periods of low renewable resource availability, and/or during power outages exceeding typical electric battery duration. Finally, we present information on the need for updates on interconnection and interoperability standards that can be leveraged by utilities for including fuel cell inverters in their asset mix.

Traveling Wave Relays for Distribution Feeder Protection with High Penetrations of Distributed Energy Resources: Preprint

Increased penetration of power electronics interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (DER) like PV, electric vehicle and battery storage in the distribution system (both in numbers and sizes) may cause bi-directional power flows under normal operation. In addition, they contribute low fault current under short circuit conditions. These two changes can impact the proper operation of legacy protection systems. This can add additional challenges during weak grid and islanded operation. In this research, traveling wave (high frequency) signature based protection scheme is proposed for future distribution systems. Simulations are performed under different transient scenarios to provide insight into the high frequency signatures to show the traveling wave behavior. Finally, this paper discusses the importance of sensing and digital processing requirements for traveling-wave protection in distribution system.

EMT Models to Evaluate Traveling Wave-Based Protection in Distribution System

The distribution system is going through significant changes. One of them is the high penetration of inverter-based distributed energy resources in the distribution system. Due to this high penetration, there is a need for a better protection system. Multiple organizations are working on creating novel protection techniques for distribution systems with high penetration of inverter-based DERs. One such innovative method is the use of traveling waves to detect and locate faults. Transmission system protection utilizes this approach, and commercial solutions exist for the transmission system. Using this approach in the distribution system is not straightforward and presents some challenges for implementation. This presentation will discuss the need for using wide-band models to model the traveling wave phenomenon in the distribution system.
