Precise ${dd}$ excitations and commensurate intersite Coulomb interactions in the dissimilar cuprates YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7–y and La 2–x Sr x CuO 4

Using high-resolution extreme ultraviolet resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (EUVRIXS) spectroscopy at Cu M-edge, we observed the doping dependent spectral shifts of inter-orbital (${dd}$) excitations of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-y and La 2-x Sr x CuO 4 . With increasing hole doping level from undoped to optimally doped superconducting compositions, the leading edge of ${dd}$ excitations is found to shift towards lower energy loss in a roughly linear trend that is irrespective to the cuprate species. The magnitude of energy shift can be explained by including a 0.15 eV Coulomb attraction between Cu 3d(x 2 -y 2 ) electrons and the doped holes on the surrounding oxygens in the atomic multiplet calculations. Finally, the consistent energy shift between distinct cuprate families suggests that this inter-site Coulomb interaction energy scale is relatively material-independent, and provides an important reference point for understanding charge density wave phenomena in the cuprate phase diagram.

Presence of Delocalized Ti 3d Electrons in Ultrathin Single-Crystal SrTiO 3

Strontium titanate (STO), with a wide spectrum of emergent properties such as ferroelectricity and superconductivity, has received significant attention in the community of strongly correlated materials. In the strain-free STO film grown on the SrRuO 3 buffer layer, the existing polar nanoregions can facilitate room-temperature ferroelectricity when the STO film thickness approaches 10 nm. Here we show that around this thickness scale, the freestanding STO films without the influence of a substrate show the tetragonal structure at room temperature, contrasting with the cubic structure seen in bulk form. Further, the spectroscopic measurements reveal the modified Ti-O orbital hybridization that causes the Ti ion to deviate from its nominal 4+ valency (3d o configuration) with excess delocalized 3d electrons. Additionally, the Ti ion in TiO 6 octahedron exhibits an off-center displacement. The inherent symmetry lowering in ultrathin freestanding films offers an alternative way to achieve tunable electronic structures that are of paramount importance for future technological applications.

Electronic surface reconstruction of TiO 2 nanocrystals revealed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

The identification of lattice multiphases in TiO 2 nanocrystals is studied by high resolution transmission electron microscope and electron diffraction patterns. Based on the spectroscopic analysis using soft x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering, it is believed that the oxygen vacancies at the interface exhibit structural distortion of the TiO$^{8-}_6$ cluster around the defect site as for the multiphase lattice. We elucidate that the extra 3d electrons nearby induce the inelastic scattering features with the excitation energy dependence owing to different energy relaxation processes, a characteristic of the electron-phonon coupling or the nature of the electron-hole pair at the intermediate state. The manifold dd excitations driven by the strong interaction between Ti-3d and O-2p electrons are noticeably rich, coexisting on both Ti and O sites. Finally, this sophisticated experiment can advance the perspective of nanocomposite TiO 2 for various interactions of surface Ti 3+ in applications of future devices.

Enhanced orbital anisotropy through the proximity to a SrTiO 3 layer in the perovskite iridate superlattices

We have used angle-dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the O K edge and first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic structures of iridate-based superlattices ( SrIr O 3 ) m / ( SrTi O 3 ) ( m = 1 , 2, 3, and ∞). We focus on the pre-edge Ir 5 d t 2 g – O 2 p orbital hybridization feature in the XAS spectra. By varying the measurement geometry relative to the incident photon polarization, we are able to extract the dichroic contrast and observe the systematic increase in the anisotropy of Ir 5 d orbitals as m decreases. First-principles calculations elucidate the orbital anisotropy coming mainly from the enhanced out-of-plane compression of Ir O 6 octahedra in the SrIr O 3 layers that are adjacent to the inserted SrTi O 3 layers. As m decreases, the increased volume fraction of these interfacial SrIr O 3 layers and their contact with the SrTi O 3 layers within the ( SrIr O 3 ) m / ( SrTi O 3 ) supercell lead to enhanced orbital anisotropy. Furthermore, the tilt and rotation of Ir O 6 octahedra are shown to be essential to understand the subtle orbital anisotropy in these superlattices, and constraining these degrees of freedom will give an incorrect trend. Overall, our results demonstrate that the structural constraint from the inserted SrTi O 3 layers, in addition to other electronic means such as polar interface and charge transfer, can serve as a knob to control the orbital degree of freedom in these iridate-based superlattices.

Realization of Electron Antidoping by Modulating the Breathing Distortion in BaBiO 3

The recent proposal of antidoping scheme breaks new ground in conceiving conversely functional materials and devices; yet, the few available examples belong to the correlated electron systems. Here, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the main group oxide BaBiO 3 is a model system for antidoping using oxygen vacancies. The first-principles calculations show that the band gap systematically increases due to the strongly enhanced Bi-O breathing distortions away from the vacancies and the annihilation of Bi 6 s /O 2 p hybridized conduction bands near the vacancies. Our further spectroscopic experiments confirm that the band gap increases systematically with electron doping, with a maximal gap enhancement of ~75% when the film's stoichiometry is reduced to BaBiO 2.75 . These results unambiguously demonstrate the remarkable antidoping effect in a material without strong electron correlations and underscores the importance of bond disproportionation in realizing such an effect.

Spectroscopic characterization of electronic structures of ultra-thin single crystal La0.7Sr0.3MnO3

Abstract We have successfully fabricated high quality single crystalline La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) film in the freestanding form that can be transferred onto silicon wafer and copper mesh support. Using soft x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy in transmission and reflection geometries, we demonstrate that the x-ray emission from Mn 3 s -2 p core-to-core transition (3 s PFY) seen in the RIXS maps can represent the bulk-like absorption signal with minimal self-absorption effect around the Mn L 3 -edge. Similar measurements were also performed on a reference LSMO film grown on the SrTiO 3 substrate and the agreement between measurements substantiates the claim that the bulk electronic structures can be preserved even after the freestanding treatment process. The 3 s PFY spectrum obtained from analyzing the RIXS maps offers a powerful way to probe the bulk electronic structures in thin films and heterostructures when recording the XAS spectra in the transmission mode is not available.

Two-dimensional electron systems in perovskite oxide heterostructures: Role of the polarity-induced substitutional defects

The discovery of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interfaces of perovskite oxides such as LaAlO 3 and SrTiO 3 has motivated enormous efforts in engineering interfacial functionalities with this type of oxide heterostructures. However, the fundamental origins of the 2DES are still not understood, e.g., the microscopic mechanisms of coexisting interface conductivity and magnetism. In this paper, we report a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation on the depth profile of 2DES-relevant Ti 3d interface carriers using depth- and element-specific techniques like standing-wave excited photoemission and resonant inelastic scattering. We found that one type of Ti 3d interface carriers, which give rise to the 2DES are located within three unit cells from the n-type interface in the SrTiO 3 layer. Unexpectedly, another type of interface carriers, which are polarity-induced Ti-on-Al antisite defects, reside in the first three unit cells of the opposing LaAlO3 layer (~10 Å). Our findings provide a microscopic picture of how the localized and mobile Ti 3d interface carriers distribute across the interface and suggest that the 2DES and 2D magnetism at the LaAlO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface have disparate explanations as originating from different types of interface carriers.

The magnetic order in multiferroic DyMnO 3

We report that with flexibility in tuning their electric and magnetic properties, multiferroics can be used in information exchange and storage in ways that are very different from the present electronic materials. Here we use resonant soft X-ray scattering spectroscopy to study the F-type (0,τ,0) and C-type (0, 1–2τ, 0) diffraction peaks from sinusoidal antiferromagnetic spin order in multiferroic DyMnO 3 . By comparing the temperature dependence of ordering wave vectors τ, peak intensities I, and correlation lengths λ measured at Mn L 2 - , O K-, and Dy M 5 -edges, we show that the nearly perfect locking between the ordering wave vectors from Dy 4f states and Mn 3d orbitals manifesting the second harmonic diffraction peak implies the notable orbital involvement in the coupling between Mn and Dy spins. Our DFT calculations further suggest that the lattice response to different antiferromagnetic ground states (A-type versus E-type) is much weaker in TbMnO 3 , in agreement with previous claim that the symmetric exchange interaction can be an important factor for understanding the ferroelectricity in DyMnO 3 than in TbMnO 3 .

Disparate Exciton-Phonon Couplings for Zone-Center and Boundary Phonons in Solid-State Graphite

The exciton-phonon coupling in highly oriented pyrolytic graphite is studied using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy. With ~70 meV energy resolution, multiple low energy excitations associated with coupling to phonons can be clearly resolved in the RIXS spectra. Here, using resonance dependence and the closed form for RIXS cross section without considering the intermediate state mixing of phonon modes, the dimensionless coupling constant g is determined to be 5 and 0.35, corresponding to the coupling strength of 0.42 eV+/-20 meV and 0.20 eV+/-20 meV, for zone center and boundary phonons, respectively. The reduced g value for the zone-boundary phonon may be related to its double resonance nature.
