Experiments on the effect of ultraviolet on contamination in vacuum systems

A series of experiments designed to investigate the effect of irradiating a portion of a vacuum system with ultraviolet (UV) light are discussed. Data obtained with the quartz crystal microbalance show that, under ultraviolet irradiation, clean and contaminated mean different things than in situations that do not involve irradiation. The history of the chamber appears to be of paramount importance, not the pumping mechanism. UV irradiation check for contamination is recommended in critical experiments.

A Comparison of Quartz Crystal Microbalance Measurements with Mass Spectrometer Determinations

An experimental program was undertaken in which mass accretion rates, as determined by a liquid nitrogen cooled quartz crystal microbalance, were compared with the mass flux rates, as determined by both a cycloidal type and a quadrupole type residual gas analyzer for five simple materials. The data indicate a high degree of correlation between these instruments insofar as the shape of the curves. There are large variations however among the absolute values.

A computer program to automate residual gas analysis

A computer program for automatic determination of gases found in an environmental chamber during spacecraft testing is discussed. Program testing is reviewed. The program is being used for the solution of experimental spectra, where the mass spectrometer is used as a contamination monitor by an untrained spectroscopist.

Analysis of low resolution mass spectra

Computer program determines gas constituents from measurements of mass/peak-height spectrum from residual gas analyzer. Applications of program include residual gas analysis for work in space environmental simulators, space environment contamination, and air pollution monitoring.

Test device prevents molecular bounce-back

A test device, which consists of six pyramidal reflectors joined together, acts as a baffle to impede the free path of the molecule to the test item by interposing a slanted surface which imparts an angular vector to the molecule and bounces it back to the chamber wall.
