The Geometric Factor of Electrostatic Plasma Analyzers: A Case Study from the Fast Plasma Investigation for the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission

We report our findings comparing the geometric factor (GF) as determined from simulations and laboratory measurements of the new Dual Electron Spectrometer (DES) being developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center as part of the Fast Plasma Investigation on NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. Particle simulations are increasingly playing an essential role in the design and calibration of electrostatic analyzers, facilitating the identification and mitigation of the many sources of systematic error present in laboratory calibration. While equations for laboratory measurement of the Geometric Factpr (GF) have been described in the literature, these are not directly applicable to simulation since the two are carried out under substantially different assumptions and conditions, making direct comparison very challenging. Starting from first principles, we derive generalized expressions for the determination of the GF in simulation and laboratory, and discuss how we have estimated errors in both cases. Finally, we apply these equations to the new DES instrument and show that the results agree within errors. Thus we show that the techniques presented here will produce consistent results between laboratory and simulation, and present the first description of the performance of the new DES instrument in the literature.

Composition of Upstream Flow for Titan's Interaction with Saturn's Magnetosphere during T9 Flyby

As described in Bertucci et al. [2007] Saturn's magnetic field is stretched out into a magnetodisk configuration where the field is confined near the equatorial plane with Titan below the current sheet. As discussed in Maurice et al. [1996] for Jupiter's outer magnetosphere where magnetodisk configuration applies the heavy ions are confined within 2 deg of the current sheet and at higher latitudes protons dominate. We show compositional evidence from the Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) Ion Mass Spectrometer (IMS) that protons dominate the ion composition for the upstream flow, while in pickup region H2+ and protons dominate. If true, then we expect a far different interaction between Saturn's magnetosphere and Titan's upper atmosphere and exosphere, where heavy ions are essentially absent.

SiC As An Energetic Particle Detector

Several new technologies have been introduced recently in the region of semiconductor material for solid state detectors (SSD). Of particular interest is silicon carbide (SIC) since its band gap is larger than that of pure silicon, reducing its dark current and making SIC capable of operating at high temperatures and more tolerant of radiation damage. But the trade off is that a higher band gap also means fewer electron hole pairs generated, and thus a smaller signal, for detecting incident radiation. To determine what the lower limit of SiC detectors to energetic particles is, we irradiated a SiC diode with particles ranging in energy from 50 keV to 1.6 MeV and masses from 1 to 16 amu. We found that the SiC detectors sensitivity was comparable to that of pure silicon, with the SiC detector being able to measure particles down to 50 keV/amu and possibly lower.
