HHH whitepaper

Abstract We here report on the progress of the HHH Workshop, that took place in Dubrovnik in July 2023. After the discovery of a particle that complies with the properties of the Higgs boson of the Standard Model, all Standard Model (SM) parameters are in principle determined. However, in order to verify or falsify the model, the full form of the potential has to be determined. This includes the measurement of the triple and quartic scalar couplings. We here report on ongoing progress of measurements for multi-scalar final states, with an emphasis on three SM-like scalar bosons at 125$$\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ Ge V , but also mentioning other options. We discuss both experimental progress and challenges as well as theoretical studies and models that can enhance such rates with respect to the SM predictions.

Tailoring the Toughening Effects in Two-Dimensional Nanomaterial-Reinforced Ceramic Matrix Composites

Abstract Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) reinforced by two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have shown extraordinary load-carrying capacities, even in the harsh environments required by emerging applications. Their exceptional mechanical performance, especially fracture toughness, primarily arises from their heterogeneous microstructures. The deliberate dispersion of 2D reinforcements enables toughening mechanisms that are extrinsic to the matrix and thus endows the composites with substantial resistance to catastrophic failure. However, the incomplete understanding of the fracture behavior of such nanocomposites, especially the complex energy dissipation process of the matrix/reinforcement interface, limits the development of stronger and tougher CMCs. To overcome these limitations, we investigate crack deflection and energy dissipation in nanocomposites using an extended cohesive shear-lag model. This new model accounts for interfacial debonding and friction, which critically control the toughening of nanocomposites. Our analysis provides mechanistic insights for optimizing the toughening effects of CMCs.

Improving Di-Higgs Sensitivity at Future Colliders in Hadronic Final States with Machine Learning

One of the central goals of the physics program at the future colliders is to elucidate the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking, including precision measurements of the Higgs sector. This includes a detailed study of Higgs boson (H) pair production, which can reveal the H self-coupling. Since the discovery of the Higgs boson, a large campaign of measurements of the properties of the Higgs boson has begun and many new ideas have emerged during the completion of this program. One such idea is the use of highly boosted and merged hadronic decays of the Higgs boson ($\mathrm{H}\to\mathrm{b}\bar{\mathrm{b}}$, $\mathrm{H}\to\mathrm{W}\mathrm{W}\to\mathrm{q}\bar{\mathrm{q}}\mathrm{q}\bar{\mathrm{q}}$) with machine learning methods to improve the signal-to-background discrimination. In this white paper, we champion the use of these modes to boost the sensitivity of future collider physics programs to Higgs boson pair production, the Higgs self-coupling, and Higgs-vector boson couplings. We demonstrate the potential improvement possible at the Future Circular Collider in hadron mode, especially with the use of graph neural networks.

In-situ x-ray scatter imaging of battery electrodes

A method and apparatus for in-situ x-ray scatter imaging of battery electrodes. An apparatus includes an X-ray source, a grid, the grid comprising stainless steel wires with uniform spacing, and a cell, the X-ray source directing a beam of energy through the metal grid and components of the cell, the cell blurring a previously sharp projection of grid wires on an image detector. A method includes providing a Spatial Frequency Heterodyne Imaging system, providing a grid, providing a cell, generating X-rays from the Spatial Frequency Heterodyne Imaging system that pass through components of the cell and the grid, and detecting a scatter image from the X-rays.
