System for the measurement of ultra-low stray light levels

An apparatus is described for measuring the effectiveness of stray light suppression light shields and baffle arrangements used in optical space experiments and large space telescopes. The light shield and baffle arrangement and a telescope model are contained in a vacuum chamber. A source of short, high-powered light energy illuminates portions of the light shield and baffle arrangement and reflects a portion of same to a photomultiplier tube by virtue of multipath scattering. The resulting signal is transferred to time-channel electronics timed by the firing of the high energy light source allowing time discrimination of the signal thereby enabling the light scattered and suppressed by the model to be distinguished from the walls and holders around the apparatus.

Notch filter

A notch filter for the selective attenuation of a narrow band of frequencies out of a larger band was developed. A helical resonator is connected to an input circuit and an output circuit through discrete and equal capacitors, and a resistor is connected between the input and the output circuits.

Band-elimination filter

Helical resonator is employed to produce stable, highly selective filter. Other features of filter include controlled bandwidth by cascading identical stages and stagger tuning, adjustable notch depth, good isolation between stages, gain set by proper choice of resistors, and elimination of spurious responses.

Experimental measurement and computer analysis of stray radiation in a telescope

A description is presented of an experimental measurement system for the study of the stray radiation performance of a 50-cm aperture astronomical telescope model. The model incorporates a very high performance baffle system. To simulate the space environment of the actual orbiting telescope, the telescope model was placed in a vacuum chamber. The stray radiation source for the experiment was a ruby laser system. A photomultiplier tube was used for the detector. A minicomputer system was used to control the experiment and to gather and process the data. A computer program was used to model the telescope baffle system. Experimentally and analytically determined stray radiation attenuation data are compared.

Analysis and experimental measurement of straylight suppression systems for the large space telescope

A computer program for straylight suppression system design and analysis was developed to analyze various proposed LST straylight suppression systems. Simultaneously, experimental measurements are being made on a simplified LST straylight suppression system in a unique facility. The experimental measurements are being used to verify and improve the computer program. The facility represents the state-of-the-art in straylight suppression measurements, and transmission factors of 10 to the minus 12th power have been measured.
