Simulation and study of small numbers of random events

Random events were simulated by computer and subjected to various statistical methods to extract important parameters. Various forms of curve fitting were explored, such as least squares, least distance from a line, maximum likelihood. Problems considered were dead time, exponential decay, and spectrum extraction from cosmic ray data using binned data and data from individual events. Computer programs, mostly of an iterative nature, were developed to do these simulations and extractions and are partially listed as appendices. The mathematical basis for the compuer programs is given.

Development of communications analysis techniques

Major results from the frequency analysis of system program (FASP) are reported. The FASP procedure was designed to analyze or design linear dynamic systems, but can be used to solve any problem that can be described by a system of linear time invariant differential equations. The program also shows plots of performance changes as design parameters are adjusted. Experimental results on narrowband FM distortion are also reported.

Optimum filters for narrow-band frequency modulation.

The results of a computer search for the optimum type of bandpass filter for low-index angle-modulated signals are reported. The bandpass filters are discussed in terms of their low-pass prototypes. Only filter functions with constant numerators are considered. The pole locations for the optimum filters of several cases are shown in a table. The results are fairly independent of modulation index and bandwidth.

Fasp - A student developed application program.

The ability of freshman and sophomore engineering students to develop realistic scientific applications programs, based solely on their background in first-semester freshman courses is demonstrated by successful completion of a large-scale computer program. The design group and its accomplishments are discussed, and the specifications of the task assigned to the group are described.
