Determination of film thicknesses of metal oxides prepared by atomic layer deposition on SBA-15

ZrO 2 and CeO 2 films were grown in SBA-15 by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) to loadings of 0.92 g oxide/g SBA-15. Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectra (EDS) showed that the oxides grew uniformly inside the mesopores. Film thicknesses were then analyzed as a function of the number of ALD cycles using three methods: 1) mass changes assuming bulk densities for the films; 2) changes in pore size from Barret-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) analysis with N 2 adsorption isotherms; and 3) small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Film thicknesses assuming bulk densities were between 6 and 8 times smaller than those obtained from BJH analysis. SAXS analysis gave film thicknesses that were approximately twice that obtained from bulk densities. Here, possible explanations of the discrepancies between these methods are discussed.

Hydrogenolysis of n -eicosane over Ru-based catalysts in a continuous flow reactor

The hydrogenolysis of n-eicosane (C 20 H 42 ) was studied under differential conditions over Ru-based catalysts including Ru/SiO 2 , Ru/TiO 2 , and Ru/SBA-15, using a continuous flow reactor that was specially designed for large hydrocarbon reactants that are solids at room temperature. Similar rates and product distributions were obtained for Ru/SiO 2 and Ru/SBA-15 at 433 K, with the most abundant products being C 1 and C 19 hydrocarbons and smaller amounts of C 8 to C 18 also being produced. The higher yield of C 1 and C 19 indicates that cleavage of the terminal C-C bond is somewhat more facile than an internal C-C bond. At 473 K the product distribution shifted to mostly C 1 suggesting that, at this temperature, the adsorbed alkyl fragments undergo complete C-C bond scission prior to desorbing. Here, the conversion was also found to be inversely proportional to the H 2 pressure. Similar results were obtained for Ru/TiO 2 except this catalyst was found to be less active than both Ru/SiO 2 and Ru/SBA-15.

Preparation of SBA-15-Supported Metals by Vapor-Phase Infiltration

A simple method is presented for incorporating various catalytic metals into the pores of SBA-15 using vapor-phase infiltration. The precursors used in Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) for Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, and Ni were exposed to an evacuated SBA-15, resulting in monolayer films of the adsorbed precursors inside the mesopores. The metal particles that formed after removal of the precursor ligands remained in the pores and had particle sizes ranging from 3.8 nm for Pt to 5.2 nm for Ni, as determined by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), XRD, and CO chemisorption. Metal loadings for saturation exposures ranged from 5.1-wt% for Ni to 9.1-wt% for Pt; however, uniform deposition was demonstrated for lower loadings of Pd by decreasing the amount of precursor. To determine the effect of the surface composition of the mesopores, Pd particles were also added to SBA-15 that was coated with a 0.2-nm film of ZrO2.

A Study of How LaFeO 3 and CaTiO 3 Supports Affect the Oxidation, Hydrogenation, and Methane Steam Reforming Activity of Pt and Ni Catalysts

The structure and catalytic properties of Pt and Ni supported on thin films of LaFeO 3 and CaTiO 3 , prepared by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), were investigated. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) show that reduction at 1073 K causes Pt-Fe intermetallic compound formation for Pt/LaFeO 3 . For Pt/CaTiO 3 , 1073-K reduction induces local decomposition of the CaTiO 3 with migration of Ti to the Pt. Reduced Pt/LaFeO 3 and Pt/CaTiO 3 exhibited CO-oxidation activity similar to that for Pt supported on MgAl 2 O 4 but were much less active for propane oxidation and hydrogenation of 1-hexene and toluene. In contrast, Ni/CaTiO 3 behaved similarly to a conventional supported Ni catalyst for the methane-steam-reforming (MSR) and 1-hexene hydrogenation. There was also no evidence for local decomposition of the perovskite in the vicinity of the Ni particles. Furthermore, the results obtained in this study demonstrate that metal-perovskite interactions that affect reactivity are specific to each component.

Enhanced Phytoextraction for Co-contaminated Soil with Cd and Pb by Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of three additives – citric acid (CA), polyaspartic acid (PASP), and FeCl{sub 3} – on the phytoextraction efficiency of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) by ryegrass (Lolium perenneL.) from artificially contaminated soils with different heavy metal concentrations. The results showed that as the concentration of pollutants increased, the TI (tolerance index) and BCF (bio-concentration factor) of ryegrass gradually increased only when FeCl{sub 3} was applied. FeCl{sub 3} also exhibited the most significant biomass enhancement and heavy metal accumulation of ryegrass, as well as the highest phytoextraction efficiency in heavily-polluted soils. The overall orders of the optimal phytoextraction efficiency for the three additives in terms of their MER (metal extraction ratio) were: FeCl{sub 3} > PASP > CA. Therefore, FeCl{sub 3} can be used to improve the Cd and Pb phytoextraction efficiency of ryegrass in heavily-polluted soils.
