Screening of Polar Electron-Phonon Interactions near the Surface of the Rashba Semiconductor BiTeCl

Understanding electron-phonon coupling in noncentrosymmetric materials is critical for controlling the internal fields which give rise to Rashba interactions. We apply time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) to study coherent phonons in the surface and bulk regions of the polar semiconductor BiTeCl. Aided by \textit{ab initio} calculations, our measurements reveal the coupling of out-of-plane $A_1$ modes and an in-plane $E_2$ mode. By considering how these modes modulate the electric dipole moment in each unit cell, we show that the polar $A_1$ modes are more effectively screened in the metallic surface region, while the non-polar $E_2$ mode couples in both regions. Finally, in addition to informing strategies to optically manipulate Rashba interactions, this work has broader implications for the behavior of electron-phonon coupling in systems characterized by inhomogeneous dielectric environments.

Orbital Ingredients and Persistent Dirac Surface State for the Topological Band Structure in FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45

FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 (FTS) occupies a special spot in modern condensed matter physics at the intersections of electron correlation, topology, and unconventional superconductivity. The bulk electronic structure of FTS is predicted to be topologically nontrivial due to the band inversion between the d x z and p z bands along Γ − Z . However, there remain debates in both the authenticity of the Dirac surface states (DSSs) and the experimental deviations of band structure from the theoretical band inversion picture. Here we resolve these debates through a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy investigation. We first observe a persistent DSS independent of k z . Then, by comparing FTS with FeSe, which has no band inversion along Γ − Z , we identify the spectral weight fingerprint of both the presence of the p z band and the inversion between the d x z and p z bands. Furthermore, we propose a renormalization scheme for the band structure under the framework of a tight-binding model preserving crystal symmetry. Our results highlight the significant influence of correlation on modifying the band structure and make a strong case for the existence of topological band structure in this unconventional superconductor. Low Temperature Dynamic Polaron Liquid in a Manganite Exhibiting Colossal Magnetoresistance

Polarons - fermionic charge carriers bearing a strong companion lattice deformation - exhibit a natural tendency for self-localization due to the recursive interaction between electrons and the lattice. While polarons are ubiquitous in insulators, how they evolve in transitions to metallic and superconducting states in quantum materials remains an open question. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to track the electron-lattice coupling in the colossal magneto-resistive bi-layer manganite La 1.2 Sr 1.8 Mn 2 O 7 across its metal-to-insulator transition. The response in the insulating high-temperature state features harmonic emissions of a dispersionless oxygen phonon at small energy transfer. Additionally, upon cooling into the metallic state, we observe a drastic redistribution of spectral weight from the region of these harmonic emissions to a broad high energy continuum. In concert with theoretical calculations, we show that this evolution implies a shift in electron-lattice coupling from static to dynamic lattice distortions that leads to a distinct polaronic ground state in the low temperature metallic phase - a dynamic polaron liquid.

Connection between coherent phonons and electron-phonon coupling in Sb (111)

We report time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (trARPES) measurements on the Sb(111) surface. We observe band- and momentum-dependent binding-energy oscillations in the bulk and surface bands driven by $A_{1g}$ and $E_{g}$ coherent phonons. While the bulk band shows simultaneous $A_{1g}$ and $E_{g}$ oscillations, the surface bands show either $A_{1g}$ or $E_{g}$ oscillations. The observed behavior is reproduced by frozen-phonon calculations based on density-functional theory. Furthermore, this evidences the connection between electron-phonon coupling and coherent binding energy dynamics tied to lattice vibration and confirms that band-, momentum-, and mode-dependent electron-phonon coupling can indeed be probed by trARPES in the low fluence limit.

Quasiparticle coherence in the nematic state of FeSe

We report electronic nematicity is a ubiquitous phenomenon in iron-based superconductors but its origin is still debated. Most models consider either spin or orbital degrees of freedom as the driving force but typically do not take electronic correlations into account. However, mass enhancements, coherent-incoherent crossovers, and the strong orbital differentiation can only be understood using correlations in a Hund's metal framework. Here, we study the influence of nematicity on the quasiparticle coherence in detwinned FeSe using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We compare photoemission spectral weight from d xz and d yz orbitals in the coherent quasiparticle peak and in the incoherent Hubbard band and find an anisotropy between the two orbitals. We interpret our observation in terms of a more coherent d xz orbital compared to the d yz orbital inside the nematic phase. This result is in contrast to earlier predictions of an incoherent d xz orbital and highlights the importance of electronic correlations in the description of nematicity.

Anisotropic quasiparticle coherence in nematic BaFe 2 As 2 studied with strain-dependent ARPES

The hallmark of nematic order in iron-based superconductors is a resistivity anisotropy but it is unclear to which extent quasiparticle dispersions, lifetimes, and coherence contribute. While the lifted degeneracy of the Fe d xz and d yz dispersions has been studied extensively, only little is known about the two other factors. In this work, we combine in situ strain tuning with ARPES and study the nematic response of the spectral weight in BaFe 2 As 2 . The symmetry analysis of the ARPES spectra demonstrates that the d xz band gains quasiparticle spectral weight compared to the d yz band for negative antisymmetric strain Δε yy suggesting the same response inside the nematic phase. Our results are compatible with a different coherence of the d xz and d yz orbital within a Hund's metal picture. We also discuss the influence of orbital mixing.
