Model reduction of nonsquare linear MIMO systems using multipoint matrix continued-fraction expansions

This paper deals with the multipoint Cauer matrix continued-fraction expansion (MCFE) for model reduction of linear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with various numbers of inputs and outputs. A salient feature of the proposed MCFE approach to model reduction of MIMO systems with square transfer matrices is its equivalence to the matrix Pade approximation approach. The Cauer second form of the ordinary MCFE for a square transfer function matrix is generalized in this paper to a multipoint and nonsquare-matrix version. An interesting connection of the multipoint Cauer MCFE method to the multipoint matrix Pade approximation method is established. Also, algorithms for obtaining the reduced-degree matrix-fraction descriptions and reduced-dimensional state-space models from a transfer function matrix via the multipoint Cauer MCFE algorithm are presented. Practical advantages of using the multipoint Cauer MCFE are discussed and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the algorithms.

A new approach to the digital redesign of continuous-time controllers

This paper presents a new method for digital redesign of both a continuous-time state-feedback control law and a cascaded analog controller. The concept of the Law of Mean from the integral calculus is utilized for the development of the equivalent digital controllers from the available analog controllers. A tuning parameter has been introduced into the digitally redesigned control gains so that the digitally controlled states will closely match the original continuous-time states. The proposed digital controllers give excellent performance.

A canonical state-space representation for SISO systems using multipoint Jordan CFE

A canonical state-space realization based on the multipoint Jordan continued-fraction expansion (CFE) is presented for single-input-single-output (SISO) systems. The similarity transformation matrix which relates the new canonical form to the phase-variable canonical form is also derived. The presented canonical state-space representation is particularly attractive for the application of SISO system theory in which a reduced-dimensional time-domain model is necessary.

Design of linear quadratic regulators with eigenvalue placement in a specified region

Two linear quadratic regulators are developed for placing the closed-loop poles of linear multivariable continuous-time systems within the common region of an open sector, bounded by lines inclined at +/- pi/2k (for a specified integer k not less than 1) from the negative real axis, and the left-hand side of a line parallel to the imaginary axis in the complex s-plane, and simultaneously minimizing a quadratic performance index. The design procedure mainly involves the solution of either Liapunov equations or Riccati equations. The general expression for finding the lower bound of a constant gain gamma is also developed.

Locally optimal-digital redesign of continuous-time systems

This paper presents a new optimal digital redesign technique for finding a dynamic digital control law from the given continuous-time counterpart by minimizing a local quadratic performance index. The quadratic performance index is chosen as the integral of the weighted squared difference between the states of the original closed-loop system and those of the digitally controlled closed-loop system at any instant between each sampling period. The developed optimal digital redesign control law enables the states of the digitally controlled closed-loop system 10 closely match those of the original closed-loop system at any instant between each sampling period, and it can easily be implemented using microcomputers with a relatively large sampling period.

Structural analysis and design of multivariable control systems: An algebraic approach

The application of algebraic system theory to the design of controllers for multivariable (MV) systems is explored analytically using an approach based on state-space representations and matrix-fraction descriptions. Chapters are devoted to characteristic lambda matrices and canonical descriptions of MIMO systems; spectral analysis, divisors, and spectral factors of nonsingular lambda matrices; feedback control of MV systems; and structural decomposition theories and their application to MV control systems.
