Reinvestigation of the level structures of the N=49 isotones 89 Zr and 91 Mo

Here, excited states of 89 Zr and 91 Mo have been investigated using the fusion reaction 6 Li+ 89 Y at beam energy of 34 MeV. Based on new experimental data, about 16 (13) new transitions have been added to the level scheme of 89 Zr ( 91 Mo). The level structures are investigated in the framework of the spherical-basis shell model using the effective interactions JUN45 and GWBXG. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the experimental results and the calculations. The calculated results indicate the newly proposed states are characterized by proton excitations from the 1f 5/2 , 2p 3/2 , 2p 1/2 orbits to the high-j 1g 9/2 orbit. The systematic features of low lying states in the N = 49 isotones are discussed.

New narrow resonances observed in the unbound nucleus F 15

The structure of the unbound 15 F nucleus is investigated using the inverse kinematics resonant scattering of a radioactive 14 O beam impinging on a CH 2 target. The analysis of 1 H( 14 O,p) 14 O and 1 H( 14 O,2p) 13 N reactions allowed the confirmation of the previously observed narrow 1/2 - resonance, near the two-proton decay threshold, and the identification of two new narrow 5/2 - and 3/2 - resonances. The newly observed levels decay by 1p emission to the ground of 14 O, and by sequential 2p emission to the ground state (g.s.) of 13 N via the 1 - resonance of 14 O. Gamow shell model (GSM) analysis of the experimental data suggests that the wave functions of the 5/2 - and 3/2 - resonances may be collectivized by the continuum coupling to nearby 2p- and 1p- decay channels. Finally, the observed excitation function 1 H( 14 O, p) 14 O and resonance spectrum in 15 F are well reproduced in the unified framework of the GSM.

Signature splitting of the g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in Ba 131 and Ce 133

Excited states in Ba 131 and Ce 133 were studied using in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy through the Sn 122 ( C 13 , 4 n ) Ba 131 and Te 125 ( C 12 , 4 n ) Ce 133 reactions, respectively. A strongly coupled band, associated with the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + configuration, was identified in Ba 131 and Ce 133 . It is the first time to observe the ν g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the N = 75 isotones. The signature partners exhibit considerable energy splitting in comparison with those in the π g 7 / 2 [ 404 ] 7 / 2 + bands in the odd- A Ta and Re isotopes. Here, extensive cranked shell model and quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations reveal the origin of the signature splitting, which depends not only on the triaxiality, but also on the configuration mixing with nearby low- j orbitals.

Lifetime measurements in the even-even Cd 102 – 108 isotopes

The heaviest T z = 0 doubly-magic nucleus, Sn 100 , and the neighboring nuclei offer unique opportunities to investigate the properties of nuclear interaction. For instance, the structure of light-Sn nuclei has been shown to be affected by the delicate balance between nuclear-interaction components, such as pairing and quadrupole correlations. From Cd to Te, many common features and phenomena have been observed experimentally along the isotopic chains, leading to theoretical studies devoted to a more general and comprehensive study of the region. In this context, having only two proton holes in the Z = 50 shell, the Cd isotopes are expected to present properties similar to those found in the Sn isotopic chain. The aim of this work was to measure lifetimes of excited states in neutron-deficient nuclei in the vicinity of Sn 100 . Here, the neutron-deficient nuclei in the N ≈ Z ≈ 50 region were populated using a multinucleon transfer reaction with a Cd 106 beam and a Mo 92 target. The beamlike products were identified by the VAMOS + + spectrometer, while the γ rays were detected using the AGATA array. Lifetimes of excited states were determined using the recoil distance Doppler-shift method, employing the Cologne differential plunger. Lifetimes of low-lying states were measured in the even-mass Cd 102 – 108 isotopes. In particular, multiple states with excitation energy up to ≈ 3 MeV, belonging to various bands, were populated in Cd 106 via inelastic scattering. The transition strengths corresponding to the measured lifetimes were compared with those resulting from state-of-the-art beyond-mean-field calculations using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing approach. Conclusions: Despite the similarities in the electromagnetic properties of the low-lying states, there is a fundamental structural difference between the ground-state bands in the Z = 48 and Z = 50 isotopes. The comparison between experimental and theoretical results revealed a rotational character of the Cd nuclei, which have prolate-deformed ground states with β 2 ≈ 0.2 . At this deformation Z = 48 becomes a closed-shell configuration, which is favored with respect to the spherical one.

The GALILEO γ-ray array at the Legnaro National Laboratories

GALILEO, a new 4 pi high-resolution gamma-detection array, based on HPGe detectors, has been developed and installed at the Legnaro National Laboratories. The GALILEO array greatly benefits from a fully-digital readout chain, customized DAQ, and a variety of complementary detectors to improve the resolving power by the detection of particles, ions or high-energy gamma-ray transitions. In this paper, a full description of the array, including electronics and DAQ, is presented together with its complementary instrumentation.

Octupole correlations near Te 110

The lifetime of the 2 + and 9 – , 11 – , 13 – , 15 – states in the neutron-deficient 110 Te was measured for the first time using the recoil distance Doppler shift technique. The reported value of the reduced transition probability B(E2; $0$$^{+}_{g.s}$ → 2 + ) = 4.3(8) × 10 3 e 2 fm 4 supports the systematic for even-mass Te isotopes and was interpreted in the framework of the large-scale shell model and cranked shell model calculations. The measured reduced transition probabilities in the negative-parity yrast band revealed the upward trend towards the high spins. Furthermore, the enhanced collectivity is discussed in terms of the tilted axis cranking approach and the symmetry configuration mixing method with the Gogny D1S interaction.

Fusion of 12 C+ 24 Mg far below the barrier: Evidence for the hindrance effect

Background: The phenomenon of fusion hindrance may have important consequences on the nuclear processes occurring in astrophysical scenarios, if it is a general behavior of heavy-ion fusion at extreme subbarrier energies, including reactions involving lighter systems, e.g., reactions in the carbon and oxygen burning stages of heavy stars. The hindrance is generally identified by the observation of a maximum of the S-factor vs energy. Whether there is an S-factor maximum at very low energies for systems with a positive fusion Q value is an experimentally challenging question. Purpose: Our aim has been to search for evidence of fusion hindrance in 12 C+ 24 Mg which is a medium-light m system with positive Q value for fusion, besides the heavier cases where hindrance is recognized to be a general phenomenon. 12 C+ 24 Mg is very close to the 16 O + 16 O and 12 C + 12 C systems that are important for the late evolution of heavy stars. Methods: The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics using the 24 Mg beam from the XTU Tandem accelerator of LNL in the energy range 26-52 MeV with an intensity of 4-8 pnA. The targets were 12 C evaporations 50 mu g/cm 2 thick, isotopically enriched to 99.9%. The fusion-evaporation residues were detected at small angles by a E-Delta E-ToF detector telescope following an electrostatic beam deflector. Results: Previous measurements of fusion cross section for 12 C+ 24 Mg were limited to above-barrier energies. In the present experiment the excitation function has been extended down to similar or equal to 15 mu b and it appears that the S factor develops a clear maximum vs energy, indicating the presence of hindrance. This is the first convincing evidence of an S factor maximum in a medium-light system with a positive fusion Q value. These results have been fitted following a recently suggested method and a detailed analysis within the coupled-channels model that has been performed using a Woods-Saxon potential and including the ground state rotational band of 24 Mg. The coupled-channels calculations give a good account of the data near and above the barrier but overpredict the cross sections at very low energies. Conclusions: The hindrance phenomenon is clearly observed in 12 C+ 24 Mg, and its energy threshold is in reasonable agreement with the systematics observed for several medium-light systems. The fusion cross sections at the hindrance threshold show that the highest value (sigma(s) = 1.6 mb) is indeed found for this system. Therefore it may even be possible to extend the measurements further down in energy to better establish the position of the S-factor maximum.
