MAESTRO1 data set calibration: The JRC approach

Calibration is a fundamental task for analysis. Therefore, the Microwave Team of the JRC Ispra has put considerable effort investigating and checking the different calibration techniques, using the data collected during the MAESTRO1 campaign. We report on this activity. First, we give an overview of the algorithms used for phase and radiometric calibration. Then, we describe the software tools that were developed to support the calibration data processing. Finally, we present and discuss the results obtained from the calibration in the test sites of Freiburg and Flevoland.

Geometric rectification and geocoding of JPL's AIRSAR data over hilly terrain

A post-processing system was developed to georeference and geocode airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collected by the JPL-Airborne SAR (AIRSAR) System over hilly terrain during the 1990 MAESTRO1 campaign. Georectification relates image coordinates and object coordinates while the geocoding involves resampling. The georectification method uses a hybrid method based upon a number of navigational parameters and minimal two ground-control points which are referenced in both image and map space. The calculation of the intersection of the SAR signal wavefront and a digital elevation model allowed, within certain error bounds, acquisition of the object-to-image and image-to-object relationships.

Preliminary results from the MAESTRO 1 Campaign over the Black Forest

The Joint Research Center (JRC) Ispra and the European Space Agency (ESA) have co-sponsored the deployment of the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), C-, L-, and P-band polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in Europe in mid-August 1989. This deployment represents the first opportunity for European agencies and institutes to evaluate the current state of the art of multifrequency polarimetric imaging technology over European Test Sites. Of particular interest to the Joint Research Center (JRC) Ispra is the Black Forest Test Site at Freiburg in the Federal Republic of Germany. This Test Site incorporates the Villingen region of the Black Forest to the south-west of Germany. This paper reports upon the activities undertaken in preparation for the MAESTRO 1 Campaign in the Black Forest Test Site. In particular this paper reports upon the ground data collection campaign for the Freiburg Test Site where extensive and intensive ground data measurements were undertaken. These measurements were based upon standard ground data collection protocols developed for forestry by the JRC and utilized throughout Europe for the MAESTRO 1 Campaign. The paper then goes on to present preliminary results derived from the SAR data using the JRC-developed software for polarimetric data interpretation, POLTOOL.

The global forest ecosystem as viewed by ERS-1, SIR-C and EOS

A program is presented to perform coordinated global experiments designed to use the unique features of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors such as the ones on ERS-1, SIR-C and EOS to characterize the physical nature of forest stands as input to global ecosystem and climatology models. Details about the objectives, program and expected results are presented.
