Remote sensing of atmospheric oxygen from a sounding rocket

This paper describes a rocket experiment to investigate mechanisms governing the interactions between two of the fundamental components of the solar-terrestrial system: the solar ionizing radiation and the earth's upper atmosphere. The aim is to characterize the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emissions resulting from these interactions in terms of physical parameters so that EUV remote sensing can be gainfully employed as a quantitative diagnostic of the terrestrial atmosphere and plasma environment. The payload consists of a high-resolution (about 0.5 A) spectrometer to measure the EUV emissions (980-1360 A) of the earth's dayglow, a moderate resolution (about 15 A) EUV spectrometer (250-1450 A) to measure the solar irradiation responsible for the photoelectron production, and a hydrogen Lyman Alpha photometer to monitor the solar irradiance and geocoronal emissions.

Background events in microchannel plates

Measurements have been made to assess the characteristics and origins of background events in microchannel plates (MCPs). An overall background rate of about 0.4 events/sq cm persec has been achieved consistently for MCPs that have been baked and scrubbed. The temperature and gain of the MCPs are found to have no significant effect on the background rate. Detection of 1.46-MeV gamma rays from the MCP glass confirms the presence of K-40, with a concentration of 0.0007 percent, in MCP glass. It is shown that beta decay from K-40 is sufficient to cause the background rate and spectrum observed. Anticoincidence measurements indicate the the background rate caused by cosmic ray interactions is small (less than 0.016 events/sq cm per sec).

Extreme ultraviolet quantum efficiency of opaque alkali halide photocathodes on microchannel plates

Comprehensive measurements are presented for the quantum detection efficiency (QDE) of the microchannel plate materials CsI, KBr, KCl, and MgF2, over the 44-1800 A wavelength range. QDEs in excess of 40 percent are achieved by several materials in specific wavelength regions of the EUV. Structure is noted in the wavelength dependence of the QDE that is directly related to the valence-band/conduction-band gap energy and the onset of atomic-like resonant transitions. A simple photocathode model allows interpretation of these features, together with the QDE efficiency variation, as a function of illumination angle.

Investigations of bonded and curved microchannel plate stacks

The technique of fusing, or bonding, individual microchannel plate (MCP) stacks together offers the possibility of improving the uniformity of MCP stack operating characteristics and provides a convenient monolithic format. Here, the effectiveness of bonded MCP stacks and stacks of MCPs with curved surfaces is investigated to determine if MCP requirements for future astrophysical detectors can be achieved. The results show that both configurations give superior MCP performance characteristics. However, some problems remain with regard to the fabrication of bonded MCP stacks resulting in poor flat field characteristics and increased background.

High efficiency photon counting detectors for the FAUST Spacelab far ultraviolet astronomy payload

The performances of sealed tube microchannel-plate position sensitive detectors having transmission CsI photocathodes or opaque CsI photocathodes are compared. These devices were developed for the FAUST Spacelab payload to accomplish imaging surveys in the band between 1300 A and 1800 A. It is demonstrated that photocathode quantum efficiencies in excess of 40 percent at 1216 A have been achieved with the transmission and the opaque CsI photocathodes. The effect of the photoelectron trajectory on the spatial resolution is assessed. Spatial resolution of less than 70 microns FWHM has been obtained and is maintained up to event rates of 50,000/sec. Background rates of 0.55 events sq cm per sec have been achieved and low distortion (less than 1 percent) imaging has been demonstrated.

Wedge and strip image readout systems for photon-counting detectors in space astronomy

EUV and far UV applications of wedge and strip anodes in photon-counting microchannel plate detector systems are discussed in light of performance data obtained as a result of EUV Explorer spacecraft open face detector and FAUST-Spacelab far UV sealed tube sensor calibrations. CsI quantum detection efficiencies of about 80 percent at 114 A and about 40 percent at 600 and 1300 A have been achieved; a position sensitivity of less than 10 microns is demonstrated, and the position resolution, image linearity, background rate, and flat-field characteristics are discussed.

Operational characteristics of Wedge and Strip image readout systems

Application of the Wedge and Strip readout system in microchannel plate detectors for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer and FAUST space astronomy programs is discussed. Anode designs with high resolution (greater than 600 x 600 pixels) in imaging and spectroscopy applications have been developed. Extension of these designs to larger formats (100 mm) with higher resolution (3000 x 3000 pixels) are considered. It is shown that the resolution and imaging are highly stable, and that the flat field performance is essentially limited by photon statistics. Very high speed event response has also been achieved with output pulses having durations of less than 10 nanoseconds.

A position sensitive microchannel photomultiplier for ultraviolet space astronomy

The 25-mm microchannel-plate, position-sensitive UV astronomy photomultiplier tube presented is intended for the EOM-1 Spacelab Mission's FAUST payload and conducts wide-field imaging surveys in the VUV over the 1400-1800-A range. The sealed detector encompasses a CsI photocathode deposited on the inner surface of a MgF2 window, a stack of microchannel plates, and a wedge-and-strip two-dimensional position-sensing anode. Since the wedge-and-strip principle requires only three anode signals, flight electronics can be reduced to three charge amplifiers and three analog-to-digital converters.

Application of wedge and strip image readout systems to detectors for astronomy

Microchannel plate (MCP) detector systems that use wedge and strip anodes for imaging radiation in the range 50 A to 8000 A are described. Test data, obtained from the calibration of the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite detectors and the ARIA EUV aeronomy sensor is presented. The long-term performance characteristics of Z-stack microchannel plates are investigated and it is shown that stable operation is achieved after an initial settling period. Conventional and new anode designs and their potential for increasing the position resolution are discussed. Position resolution of better than 80 microns FWHM has been attained for 50 mm devices, and this is shown to be essentially independent of event location. Image nonlinearity of less than 0.3 percent has been achieved with stability to better than 0.1 percent. Differential nonlinearity of less than 1 percent and stability to better than 1 percent have been obtained. Measurements of the quantum efficiency of a CsI photocathode on an MCP are presented, demonstrating efficiencies as high as 47 percent.

Calibration of photon counting imaging microchannel plate detectors for EUV astronomy

The calibration of photon counting imaging detectors for satellite based EUV astronomy is a complex process designed to ensure the validity of the data received 'in orbit'. The methods developed to accomplish calibration of microchannel plate detectors for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer are described and illustrated. The characterization of these detectors can be subdivided into three categories: stabilization, performance tests, and environmental tests.

Calibration of the thin film filters to be used on the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite

The methods of calibrating the filters used on the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) astronomical satellite are described. EUVE will conduct the first all-sky survey in the entire EUV band. The measurement of the filters' transmission properties from the soft X-ray to the far UV using a grazing incidence monochromator is discussed. A particle ingress test to determine the ability of the filters to inhibit energetic particles in earth orbit from entering the detector and increasing the background is described. Problems encountered in calibrating these four filters are also presented.

Investigation of large format microchannel plate Z configurations

The performance of triplet (Z) stacks of microchannel plates (MCPs) has been studied as a part of the instrument development for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite mission. Relatively large MCPs with a 60-mm diameter and having a large 80:1 channel length to diameter (L:D) ratio were used in several configurations. The MCPs were used in the EUVE prototype imaging detector to provide more than 512 x 512 pixels with low image distortion (less than 1 percent). The gain and pulse height characteristics of the MCPs were examined, showing that both high gains (more than 2 x 10 to the 7th) and tight output pulse height distributions (less than 30 percent FWHM) may be achieved. Simple distribution techniques have also allowed low intrinsic background event rates (less than 0.15 events per sq cm/s) to be obtained. Variation of the quantum efficiency of the MCPs over the wavelength range 160-1216 A has been investigated for a range of angles of incidence. The effect of temperature variations on MCP operating characteristics has also been evaluated.

Microchannel plate EUV detectors for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer

The design and operating characteristics of the prototype imaging microchannel plate (MCP) detector for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) Satellite are discussed. It is shown that this detector has achieved high position resolution performance (greater than 512 x 512 pixels) and has low (less than one percent) image distortion. In addition, the channel plate scheme used has tight pulse height distributions (less than 40 percent FWHM) for UV radiation and displays low (less than 0.2 cnt/sq cm-s) dark background counting rates. Work that has been done on EUV filters in relation to the envisaged filter and photocathode complement is also described.
