X/Ka Celestial Frame Improvements: Vision to Reality

In order to extend the International Celestial Reference Frame from its S/X-band (2.3/8.4 GHz) basis to a complementary frame at X/Ka-band (8.4/32 GHz), we began in mid-2005 an ongoing series of X/Ka observations using NASA s Deep Space Network (DSN) radio telescopes. Over the course of 47 sessions, we have detected 351 extra-galactic radio sources covering the full 24 hours of right ascension and declinations down to -45 degrees. Angular source position accuracy is at the part-per-billion level. We developed an error budget which shows that the main errors arise from limited sensitivity, mismodeling of the troposphere, uncalibrated instrumental effects, and the lack of a southern baseline. Recent work has improved sensitivity by improving pointing calibrations and by increasing the data rate four-fold. Troposphere calibration has been demonstrated at the mm-level. Construction of instrumental phase calibrators and new digital baseband filtering electronics began in recent months. We will discuss the expected effect of these improvements on the X/Ka frame.

Microwave Comb Generator

Stable reference tones aid testing and calibration of microwave receivers. Signal generator puts out stable tones in frequency range of 2 to 10 GHz at all multiples of reference input frequency, at any frequency up to 1 MHz. Called "comb generator" because spectral plot resembles comb. DC reverse-bias current switched on and off at 1 MHz to generate sharp pulses in step-recovery diode. Microwave components mounted on back of special connector containing built-in attenuator. Used in testing microwave and spread-spectrum wide-band receivers.

Searching Circuit For A Servoloop

Feedback error voltage forced into range of stability. Circuit connected in series with error-voltage line of feedback loop. When loop operates normally in stable region, searching circuit does not disturb operation, and error-voltage output of loop filter is control voltage. When servo unlocks and error-voltage output of loop filter wanders into unstable range, searching circuit forces control voltage to sweep through stable region repeatedly until lock recovered. Consists of two halves identical except polarities of some parts in each half opposite of corresponding parts in other half.

Signal Generator Compensates For Phase Shift In Cable

Stabilized reference signal delivered to remote unit. Signals at two different frequencies transmitted back and forth along cable and mixed to measure propagation delay in cable. Delay-measuring circuitry part of feedback loop constraining overall delay at stable value. Intended for use in system generating precise time and frequency signals, signal-generating subsystem compensates for phase shift in cable.

Phase calibration generator

A phase calibration system was developed for the Deep Space Stations to generate reference microwave comb tones which are mixed in with signals received by the antenna. These reference tones are used to remove drifts of the station's receiving system from the detected data. This phase calibration system includes a cable stabilizer which transfers a 20 MHz reference signal from the control room to the antenna cone. The cable stabilizer compensates for delay changes in the long cable which connects its control room subassembly to its antenna cone subassembly in such a way that the 20 MHz is transferred to the cone with no significant degradation of the hydrogen maser atomic clock stability. The 20 MHz reference is used by the comb generator and is also available for use as a reference for receiver LO's in the cone.
