Optimization Model and Algorithm for Capacity Planning and Operation of Reliable and Carbon-neutral Power Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Generation

In this work, we propose a Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) model that optimizes both long-term capacity planning (such as the number and size of dispatchable/renewable generators, batteries, and transmission lines) and hourly operation (such as on/off schedules of dispatchable generators, power output from each generator, and power flow) to maximize power system reliability while minimizing total cost and CO2 emissions.

Beyond Price-Taker: Multiscale Optimization of a Wind-Battery Integrated Energy System within the Wholesale Electricity Market

This work presents the optimization of a wind-battery IES using the multiscale optimization framework proposed in our previous work to quantify errors from the price-taker assumption. The framework, built over Prescient (an open-source package for solving production cost models), is applied to the RTS-GMLC dataset, an open-source dataset that is representative of the southwest U.S. wholesale electricity market. The framework provides detailed bidding, market clearing, and control processes of an IES, and it can quantify how the IES interacts with the market. In this work, we use the retrofit of a wind farm with a battery storage system as an example to show the difference in the market outcomes and revenues obtained from both price-taker and multiscale optimization approaches. Our work goes beyond price-taker and deep dives into quantifying IES-market interaction in optimizing IES. This framework enables users to explore how different design and operation decisions of energy systems interact with the market and provides a more accurate evaluation than the price-taker assumption.

Nonconvex Robust Optimization for the Design and Operation of Advanced Energy Systems Using PyROS

This work discusses recent advances of the two-stage robust optimization (RO) solver PyROS and applications to advanced energy systems optimization. To demonstrate the computational performance and reliability of PyROS, a study on a monoethanolamine (MEA)-based CO2 absorption flowsheet is presented. (Near-)robust feasible designs for CO2 absorption flowsheet at high carbon capture are obtained with the PyROS solver. The results demonstrate that the PyROS solver, including recent extensions to multi-stage RO settings, provides a reliable avenue to optimize the design and operation of advanced energy systems subject to various sources of parametric uncertainty.

Recent Advances of PyROS: A Pyomo Solver for Nonconvex Two-Stage Robust Optimization in Process Systems Engineering

This poster highlights uncertainty and technical risk reduction capabilities in CCSI2, with a focus on robust optimization. It presents recent advances of the two-stage robust optimization (RO) solver PyROS and applications to advanced energy systems optimization. To demonstrate the computational performance and reliability of PyROS, a benchmarking study on a library of over 8,500 small-scale RO problems is presented. Further, PyROS is used to obtain robust system designs of a MEA-based CO2 absorber under uncertainty in the thermodynamic property models for a variety of CO2 capture rate threshold requirements. Overall, the results demonstrate that the PyROS solver, including recent extensions to multi-stage RO settings, provides a reliable avenue to optimize the design and operation of advanced energy systems subject to various sources of parametric uncertainty.

Conceptual Design of Integrated Energy Systems with Market Interaction Surrogate Models

Most integrated energy system (IES) optimization frameworks employ the price-taker approximation, which ignores important interactions with market and can result in overestimated economic values. In this work, we pro-pose a machine learning surrogate-assisted optimization framework to quantify the IES/market interactions and thus go beyond price taker. We use time series clustering to generate representative IES operation profiles for the IES optimization problem and use machine learning surrogate models to predict the IES/market interaction. We quantify the accuracy of the time series clustering and surrogate models in a case study to optimally retrofit a nuclear power plant with polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzer to co-produce electricity and hydrogen.

A mixed integer linear programming approach for the design of chemical process families

Tackling climate change goals requires widespread deployment of process technology variants across many decentralized sites with different geographical, environmental, and operational requirements. Conventional engineering approaches focus on unique designs for each installation (process variant), while missing opportunities for manufacturing standardization. Here, instead we seek to optimize a process platform of common unit designs while simultaneously designing an entire family of process variants that make use of that platform. This reduces engineering effort, deployment timelines, and manufacturing costs. We propose a nonlinear generalized disjunctive programming formulation and convert this to an efficient mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation through discretization of the design space. We formulate our optimization in Pyomo with costing from IDAES, and we demonstrate the computational performance and solution quality on a water treatment desalination system from the PARETO framework and a carbon capture system built in Aspen Plus as part of CCSI2.

Recent Advances in PyROS: The Pyomo Solver for Two-Stage Nonconvex Robust Optimization

The slides present recent algorithmic and implementation advances of the two-stage robust optimization (RO) solver PyROS, and a benchmarking study which demonstrates the utility of PyROS for two-stage RO problems. The advances include extensions of the scope of PyROS to models with uncertain variable bounds, improvements to the initializations of the subproblems used by the underlying cutting set algorithm, and extensions of the uncertainty set interfaces. The benchmarking study is performed on a library of over 8,500 instances, with variations in the nonlinearities, degree-of-freedom partitioning, uncertainty sets, and polynomial decision rule approximations. Overall, the results highlight the effectiveness of PyROS for obtaining robust solutions to optimization problems with uncertain equality constraints.
