Organic contamination analysis: High resolution mass spectrometric analysis of surface organics on selected areas of Surveyor 3

The mirror and middle shroud were extracted for organics by washing the surfaces with solvents. The techniques are discussed. Ion microprobe analyses of the primarily atomic species are presented. The sources of the organic contaminants are: (1) hydrocarbons from lubricating oils and general terrestrial contamination, (2) dioctyl phthalate, probably from polyethylene bagging material (the plasticizer), (3) carboxylic acids from decomposition of grease and general terrestrial contamination, (4) silicones from sources such as lubricating oil, (5) outgassing of electronics and plasticizer, (6) vinyl alcohol and styrene copolymer, probably from electronic insulation, and (7) nitrogenous compounds from the lunar module and possibly Surveyor 3 engine exhaust.

Compounds of carbon and other volatile elements in Apollo 14 and 15 samples.

DF dissolution and pyrolysis showed that the indigenous methane and ethane contents in Apollo 14 and 15 lunar samples correlated with the amounts of solar wind gases and the deutero-carbon reaction gases. Pyrolysis evolved mainly CO and N2 and lower amounts of CO2. Other compounds detected and quantitated by these techniques were DCN, HCN, CS2, D2S, and PD3.

Preliminary organic analyses of the DSDP /JOIDES/ cores - Legs V-IX.

Descriptions of the methods used and results obtained in analyses of deep sea drilling cores. The analyses were performed in two phases (differing in degree of particularization) depending on the amount of core sample available. The results are presented in relation to the ages and to the fossil fauna and flora of the sediments.

Organic analyses of selected areas of Surveyor III recovered on the Apollo 12 mission.

Results of organic analyses of certain parts of the Surveyor 3 television camera retrieved from the moon by the Apollo 12 astronauts. Organic contamination of the mirror surface and camera exterior (shroud) is reported and is attributed to spacecraft outgassing, Lunar Module descent engine blasting, possible Surveyor 3 engine exhaust products, and unknown sources.

High-resolution mass spectrometry of nitrogenous compounds of the Colorado Green River formation oil shale.

Basic nitrogenous compounds isolated from extracts of Green River Formation oil shale were analyzed. The major homologous constituents found were the compositional types - namely, quinolines, tetrahydrequinolines with minor amounts of pyridines and indoles series and traces of more aromatized nitrogen compounds. These results are correlated with nitrogen compounds isolated from Green River Formation retort oil and are a survey of the unaltered nitrogen compounds indigeneous to the shale.
