Possible wobbling phenomenon in 125 Xe

In the present paper, negative-parity bands based on the νh 11/2 configuration in 125 Xe have been revisited. This nucleus was populated through the reaction 82 Se( 48 Ca, 5n) 125 Xe at a beam energy of 205 MeV and the corresponding γ rays were observed using the Gammasphere spectrometer. Evidence for first and second phonon wobbling excitations has been established by measurements of directional correlation ratios and angular distributions of the involved γ rays. Here, the observed wobbling energy of the bands involved were compared with the recently published results obtained within the framework of triaxial projected shell-model calculations.

Investigations of room temperature multiferroic and magneto-electric properties of (1-Φ) PZTFT-Φ CZFMO particulate composites

Multiferroic composites consisting of a single-phase multiferroic [0.6(PbZr 0.53 Ti 0.47 O 3 )-0.4(PbFe 0.5 Ta 0.5 )O 3 ] as a matrix and a magnetostrictive phase (Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 Fe 1.7 Mn 0.3 O 4 ) dispersed in the matrix are fabricated via hybrid synthesis technique. The structure and surface morphology studies using x-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques indicate the formation of 3-0 type particulate composites. Coexistence of soft-magnetic behavior and ferroelectric characteristics are confirmed for composites from magnetization vs magnetic field (M–H) and polarization vs electric field (P–E) measurements, respectively. Magneto-dielectric (MD) measurement shows significant changes in the dielectric properties with the application of a magnetic field, indicating the existence of strong MD behavior. The biquadratic nature of magneto-electric (ME) coupling is described by the Landau free energy equation arising from the strain transfer at the interfaces between the constituent phases. The direct magneto-electric voltage coefficient measurement also confirms very strong coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism and supports the strain-mediated magneto-electric effect in composites. The Φ = 0.3 composite exhibits the maximum ME coefficient of 20.72 mV/cm Oe with M S = 24.62 emu/g, H C = 59.66 Oe, and piezoelectric coefficient value d 33 = 19 pC/N. In conclusion, the strong magneto-electric effect along with low dielectric loss at room temperature in these composites suggests their suitability for multifunctional magneto-electric device applications such as magnetic sensors, etc.

Highly deformed band structures due to core excitations in 123 Xe

High-spin states in 123 Xe were populated in the 80 Se( 48 Ca, 5n) 123 Xe reaction at a beam energy of 207 MeV. γ-ray coincidence events were recorded with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Four new high-spin bands have been discovered in this nucleus. The bands are compared with those calculated within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov models. Furthermore, it is concluded that the configurations of the bands involve two-proton excitations across the Z = 50 as well as excitation of neutrons across the N = 82 shell gaps resulting in a large deformation, ε 2 ≈ 0.30 and γ ≈ 5°.

Instability and evolution of the magnetic ground state in metallic perovskites GdRh 3 C 1-x B x

In this paper, we report investigations of the structural, magnetic, electrical transport and thermal properties of five compositions of the metallic perovskite GdRh 3 C 1–x B x (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 1.00). Our results show that all the five compositions undergo magnetic ordering at low temperatures, but the nature of the ordered state is significantly different in the carbon- and the boron-rich compositions, where the former shows signatures of an amplitude-modulated magnetic structure and the latter exhibits evidences of an equal-moment incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering. We also observe a remarkable field-dependent evolution of conduction carrier polarization in the compositionally disordered compounds. The outcomes indicate that this system is energetically situated in proximity to a magnetic instability where small variations in the control parameter(s), such as lattice constant and/or electron density, lead to considerably different ground states.

Directional solidification of Cu-Pb and Bi-Ga monotectic alloys under normal gravity and during parabolic flight

Cu-Pb and Bi-Ga monotectic alloys of nominal hypermonotectic compositions were directionally solidified under various furnace translation rates, temperature gradients, and gravity levels. Gravity was varied by solidifying the alloys under ground conditions and in the furnace aboard NASA KC-135 aircraft, flying on parabolic trajectories. High translation rates, high gradients, high gravity levels, and higher density and lower thermal conductivity of the L2 phase favored the formation of fiber composite structure, while the opposite conditions resulted in structures consisting of L2 droplets in alpha matrix. A modified particle engulfment theory as originally enunciated by Ulhmann et al. (1964) is proposed to explain these observations.

Applications of NASTRAN in Gust Response Analysis at Northrop

A comprehensive gust response analysis was performed on a complete model of an airplane using the NASTRAN aeroelastic package. The analysis investigated random response to atmospheric turbulence and transient response to a discrete gust, including control system dynamics in both cases. It is shown that NASTRAN is an effective tool for aeroelastic analysis and active control system design.
