A global search and rescue concept using synthetic aperture radar and passive user targets

A terrestrial search and rescue concept is defined embodying the use of passive radio-frequency reflectors in conjunction with an orbiting synthetic aperture radar to detect, identify, and locate users. An airborne radar test was conducted to evaluate the basic concept. In this test simple corner-reflector targets were successfully imaged. Results from this investigation were positive and indicate that the concept can be used to investigate new approaches focused on the development of a global search and rescue system.

Logical-function generator

Apparatus and technique for generating logical functions and circuits have been developed. They provide aid in designing and constructing hardware to generate logic circuits, by defining circuit connections required to generate these functions. With this method, it is possible quickly and automatically to design logic, while eliminating involved and time-consuming mathematical manipulations.

A shuttle compatible advanced technology laboratory.

Discussion of the advanced technology laboratory concept developed at the Langley Research Center as a means for effectively conducting and managing its shuttle experiments using the shuttle sortie mode of operation. The Center is provided with a space counterpart to its ground-based laboratory through which space can be made routinely available to the Langley researcher. This concept is serving as a focal point in planning to meet Langley's future needs in the 70's and 80's.

Rate data encoder

An apparatus and technique for encoding rate data is described. The expected range of the rate data is determined and the data falling within that range is encoded by conventional digital techniques. If the data falls either below or above the range, the encoding is stopped and signals are transmitted indicating that the data is not within the expected range.

Variable word length encoder reduces TV bandwith requirements

Adaptive variable resolution encoding technique provides an adaptive compression pseudo-random noise signal processor for reducing television bandwidth requirements. Complementary processors are required in both the transmitting and receiving systems. The pretransmission processor is analog-to-digital, while the postreception processor is digital-to-analog.
