Collective neutrino oscillations on a quantum computer with hybrid quantum-classical algorithm

We simulate the time evolution of collective neutrino oscillations in two-flavor settings on a quantum computer. We explore the generalization of Trotter-Suzuki approximation to time-dependent Hamiltonian dynamics. The trotterization steps are further optimized using the Cartan decomposition of two-qubit unitary gates U ϵ SU(4) in the minimum number of controlled-NOT (CNOT) gates making the algorithm more resilient to the hardware noise. As a result, a more efficient hybrid quantum-classical algorithm is also explored to solve the problem on noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices.

Quantum information and quantum simulation of neutrino physics

In extreme astrophysical environments such as core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers, neutrinos play a major role in driving various dynamical and microphysical phenomena, such as baryonic matter outflows, the synthesis of heavy elements, and the supernova explosion mechanism itself. The interactions of neutrinos with matter in these environments are flavor-specific, which makes it of paramount importance to understand the flavor evolution of neutrinos. Flavor evolution in these environments can be a highly nontrivial problem thanks to a multitude of collective effects in flavor space, arising due to neutrino-neutrino ($v$-$v$) interactions in regions with high neutrino densities. A neutrino ensemble undergoing flavor oscillations under the influence of significant $v$-$v$ interactions is somewhat analogous to a system of coupled spins with long-range interactions among themselves and with an external field (‘long-range’ in momentum-space in the case of neutrinos). As a result, it becomes pertinent to consider whether these interactions can give rise to significant quantum correlations among the interacting neutrinos, and whether these correlations have any consequences for the flavor evolution of the ensemble. In particular, one may seek to utilize concepts and tools from quantum information science and quantum computing to deepen our understanding of these phenomena. In this article, we attempt to summarize recent work in this field. In conclusion, we also present some new results in a three-flavor setting, considering complex initial states.

Symmetry breaking/symmetry preserving circuits and symmetry restoration on quantum computers

In this article, we discuss some aspects related to the symmetries of a quantum many-body problem when trying to treat it on a quantum computer. Several features related to symmetry conservation, symmetry breaking, and possible symmetry restoration are reviewed. After briefly discussing some of the standard symmetries relevant for many-particle systems, we discuss the advantage of encoding some symmetries directly in quantum ansätze, especially to reduce the quantum register size. It is, however, well-known that the use of symmetry-breaking states can also be a unique way to incorporate specific internal correlations when a spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs. These aspects are discussed in the quantum computing context. Ultimately, an accurate description of quantum systems can be achieved only when the initially broken symmetries are properly restored. We review several methods explored previously to perform symmetry restoration on a quantum computer, for instance, the ones based on symmetry filtering by quantum phase estimation and by an iterative independent set of Hadamard tests. We propose novel methods that pave the new directions to perform symmetry restoration, like those based on the purification of the state employing the linear combination of unitaries (LCU) approach.

Role of non-Gaussian quantum fluctuations in neutrino entanglement

The flavor evolution of neutrinos in environments with large neutrino number densities is an open problem at the nexus of astrophysics and neutrino flavor physics. Among the many unanswered questions pertaining to this problem, it remains to be determined whether neutrino-neutrino coherent scattering can give rise to nontrivial quantum entanglement among neutrinos, and whether this can affect the flavor evolution in a meaningful way. To gain further insight into this question, here we study a simple system of two interacting neutrino beams and obtain the exact phase space explored by this system using the Husimi quasiprobability distribution. We observe that the entanglement induced by the coupling leads to strong delocalization in phase-space with largely non-Gaussian quantum fluctuations. The link between the neutrino entanglement and quantum fluctuations is illustrated using the one- and two-neutrino entropy. In addition, we propose an approximate phase-space method to describe the interacting neutrinos problem, where the exact evolution is replaced by a set of independent mean-field evolutions with a statistical sampling of the initial conditions. The phase-space approach provides a simple and accurate method to describe the gross features of the neutrino entanglement problem. Applications are shown using time-independent and time-dependent Hamiltonians in the nonadiabatic regime.

Many-Body Collective Neutrino Oscillations: Recent Developments

Neutrino flavor transformations in core-collapse supernovae and binary neutron star mergers represent a complex and unsolved problem that is integral to our understanding of the dynamics and nucleosynthesis in these environments. The high number densities of neutrinos present in these environments can engender various collective effects in neutrino flavor transformations, driven either by neutrino-neutrino coherent scattering, or in some cases, through collisional (incoherent) interactions. An ensemble of neutrinos undergoing coherent scattering among themselves is an interacting quantum many-body system -- as such, there is a tantalising prospect of quantum entanglement developing between the neutrinos, which can leave imprints on their flavor evolution histories. Here, in this study, we seek to summarize recent progress that has been made towards understanding this phenomenon.

Effects of triaxiality and residual n p interaction in the proton emission from Ho 140

Here we present a detailed theoretical investigation of proton emission from 140 Ho within the nonadiabatic quasiparticle approach. The calculated proton emission half-life reproduces well the measured data. The importance of triaxiality and of the residual np interaction are studied. The ground state spin and parity of 139 Dy (daughter) and 140 Ho (parent) are ascertained unambiguously as 7/2 + and 3 – , respectively, by analyzing the rotational energies, half-lives, and branching ratios.

Quantum computation of nuclear observables involving linear combinations of unitary operators

Here we present the quantum computation of nuclear observables where the operators of interest are first decomposed in terms of the linear combination of unitaries. Then we utilize the Hadamard test and the linear combination of unitaries based methods to compute the expectation values. We apply these methods to calculate the electric quadrupole moment of the deuteron. The results are compared for the Jordan-Wigner transformation and Gray code encoding. We discuss the versatility of our approach that can be utilized in general to calculate several observables on a quantum computer.

Fine structure in the odd-odd proton emitter Tm 144

Axial symmetry breaking in 144 Tm is probed by examining its proton emission fine structure. The ground-state spin and parity in 144 Tm and daughter 143 Er are assigned unambiguously based on the corroboration of our calculations with the present data. Here we establish the first microscopic description of fine structure in odd-odd proton emitters, which is capable of resolving ambiguities present in the assignments of transitions in such nuclei.

Filtering states with total spin on a quantum computer

Starting from a general wave-function described on a set of spins or qubits, we propose several quantum algorithms to extract the components of this state on eigenstates of total spin S 2 and its z component S z . The method plays the role of total spin projection and gives access to the amplitudes of the initial state on a total spin basis. Here, the different algorithms have various degrees of sophistication depending on the requested tasks. They can either solely project onto the subspace with good total spin or completely uplift the degeneracy in this subspace. In the former case, when the projection on the total spin j is made, we show that the number of operations for the projection can be reduced from a quadratic to a linear dependence in j. After each measurement, the state collapses to one of the spin eigenstates that could be used for postprocessing. For this reason, we call the method total quantum spin filtering.
