Reflector antennas with low sidelobes, low cross polarization, and high aperture efficiency

Techniques are presented for computing the horn near field patterns on the subreflectors and for correcting the phase center errors of the horn pattern by shaping the subreflector surface. The diffraction pattern computations for scanned beams are described. The effects of dish aperture diffraction on pattern bandwidth are investigated. A model antenna consisting of a reflector, shaped subreflector, and corrugated feed horn is described.

Focal surfaces of offset dual-reflector antennas

An analytical technique is described for finding the best focal surfaces for offset-fed dual-reflector antennas. A ray tracing procedure traces the loci of rays incident on the main reflector onto a plane or 'screen' situated perpendicular to a central ray of the antenna system. Given, then, by computer graphics, the best feed locations for azimuth and elevation plane patterns, an aperture diffraction method is used which can compute the sidelobe levels and beamwidths resulting from aperture phase errors on scanned or multibeam patterns. High-magnification Cassegrain or Gregorian antennas, with tilt angles optimised according to Japanese criteria, produce excellent radiation diagrams many beamwidths from the central, unaberrated pattern direction.

Techniques for low sidelobe, high efficiency offset dual reflector antennas

Antennas with very low sidelobe levels and high aperture efficiencies are employed in satellite communications for both ground and satellite borne systems to reduce microwave interference due to traffic congestion to and from the geostationary satellite orbit. Multiple beam antennas with sidelobes 30 to 40 dB below main beam peaks are required with aperture efficiencies approaching 80%. In the present investigation techniques are presented which make it possible to obtain multibeam patterns with the required characteristics. The considered limited scanned antennas have applications to military and commercial radars as well as to space communications. It is pointed out that offset dual reflector antennas designed according to Japanese tilt criteria offer attractive solutions because optimum aperture distributions can be realized without aperture blocking. Attention is given to ideal aperture distributions, corrugated conical horn design, and subreflector design.
