Electrochemical cells and methods of manufacturing the same

Electrochemical cells and methods of making electrochemical cells are described herein. In some embodiments, an apparatus includes a multi-layer sheet for encasing an electrode material for an electrochemical cell. The multi-layer sheet including an outer layer, an intermediate layer that includes a conductive substrate, and an inner layer disposed on a portion of the conductive substrate. The intermediate layer is disposed between the outer layer and the inner layer. The inner layer defines an opening through which a conductive region of the intermediate layer is exposed such that the electrode material can be electrically connected to the conductive region. Thus, the intermediate layer can serve as a current collector for the electrochemical cell.

Control system and method for tapered structure construction

A control system for forming a tapered structure includes a sensor providing feedback for a machine for forming a tapered structure including at least three rolls having at least one bend roll and at least two guide rolls. The guide rolls may include rollette banks having a plurality of rollettes. The machine may also include an adjustment mechanism to position at least one of the rolls, where a diameter of the tapered structure being formed is controlled by relative positions of the rolls. The machine may also include a joining element to join edges of a stock of material together as it is rolled through the rolls to form the tapered structure. The control system may also include a controller to receive feedback from the sensor and to send a control signal based on the feedback to the adjustment mechanism for positioning at least one of the rolls.

Stationary semi-solid battery module and method of manufacture

A method of manufacturing an electrochemical cell includes transferring an anode semi-solid suspension to an anode compartment defined at least in part by an anode current collector and an separator spaced apart from the anode collector. The method also includes transferring a cathode semi-solid suspension to a cathode compartment defined at least in part by a cathode current collector and the separator spaced apart from the cathode collector. The transferring of the anode semi-solid suspension to the anode compartment and the cathode semi-solid to the cathode compartment is such that a difference between a minimum distance and a maximum distance between the anode current collector and the separator is maintained within a predetermined tolerance. The method includes sealing the anode compartment and the cathode compartment.

Gravity induced flow cell

The flow cell includes first and second reservoirs having a selected volume containing a flowable redox electrode. A membrane separates charged and discharged material. An energy-extraction region includes electronically conductive porous current collectors through or adjacent to which the flowable redox electrodes flow and to which charge transfer occurs. Structure is provided for altering orientation of the flow cell whereby gravity induces flow of the flowable redox electrode between the first and second reservoirs to deliver power. By varying the angle of the cell, flow rate and power delivered on discharge or the charge rate on charge may be varied.

An offshore solution to cobalt shortages via adsorption-based harvesting from seawater

The forecasted dominance of electric vehicles and the need for grid-scale energy storage have heightened concerns that cobalt, a key constituent of lithium-ion batteries, could become a critical limiting factor. With limited terrestrial resources and over half the global production coming from politically challenging regions increasing risk, a shortage of cobalt could be experienced by the early 2020s. Fortunately, the oceans contain about 70 times more cobalt than on land and can be harvested sustainably with passive adsorption technologies; and a symbiotic system using existing offshore structures to harvest cobalt could enhance the economic feasibility of seawater cobalt harvesting. Our study finds that retrofitting just 76 unused oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico could extract an average of 27.3% of the nation’s 2017 cobalt consumption. New Offshore Opportunity for Underwater Cobalt Harvesting has the potential to reduce the cobalt supply pinch point in lithium-ion battery production.

Results of an Ocean Trial of the Symbiotic Machine for Ocean uRanium Extraction

Amidoxime-based adsorbents have become highly promising for seawater uranium extraction. However, current deployment schemes are stand-alone, intermittent operation systems that have significant practical and economic challenges. This paper presents two 1/10th scale prototypes of a Symbiotic Machine for Ocean uRanium Extraction (SMORE) which pairs with an existing offshore structure. This pairing reduces mooring and deployment costs while enabling continuous, autonomous uranium extraction. Utilizing a shell enclosure to decouple the mechanical and chemical requirements of the adsorbent, one design concept prototyped continuously moves the shells through the water while the other keeps them stationary. Water flow in the shells on each prototype was determined using the measurement of radium adsorbed by MnO 2 impregnated acrylic fibers. The results from a nine-week ocean trial show that while movement of the shells through the water may not have an effect on uranium adsorption by the fibers encased, it could help reduce biofouling if above a certain threshold speed (resulting in increased uptake), while also allowing for the incorporation of design elements to further mitigate biofouling such as bristle brushes and UV lamps. The trace metal uptake by the AI8 adsorbents in this trial also varied greatly from previous marine deployments, suggesting that uranium uptake may depend greatly upon the seawater concentrations of other elements such as vanadium and copper. Lastly, the results from this study will be used to inform future work on the seawater uranium production cost from a full-scale SMORE system.

Design considerations for ultra-precision magnetic bearing supported slides

Development plans for a prototype servocontrolled machine with 1 angstrom resolution of linear motion and 50 mm range of travel are described. Two such devices could then be combined to produce a two dimensional machine for probing large planar objects with atomic resolution, the Angstrom Resolution Measuring Machine (ARMM).
