Applying Multi-Frequency AC LOCO for Finding Sextupole Errors

A fast and precise technique of multi-frequency AC LOCO has been developed and tested for finding the sextupole alignment and field-offset errors at NSLS-II. This technique is based on sine-wave beam excitation simultaneously at multiple frequencies via different fast correctors. The unique combination of the fast speed and high measurement accuracy opens the door for two different types of potential applications: finding the sextupole alignment and field-offset errors. Beam excitation via fast correctors results in the elimination of the systematic error caused by the hysteresis effect. Systematic errors of the sextupole alignment caused by orbit drift and power supply calibration are also eliminated because the measurement takes only two minutes and does not depend on the current-to-field conversion of sextupole magnets. Furthermore, the simulation studies indicate that multi-frequency AC LOCO together with an orbit bump bigger than 0.5 mm can be applied to measure the relative field offset of a sextupole magnet with a precision better than 10%. The measurement technique is described and the results of two proof-of-principle experiments carried out at NSLS-II are presented.

Beam impedance and heating analysis of the diagnostic stripline

In this work the heat transfer analysis has been performed for the stripline kicker, design of which is used at many accelerator facilities as a part of the transverse bunch-by-bunch feed-back system, including NSLS-II. The experimental data of the electrode temperature have been collected from a special diagnostic stripline designed with six infrared view ports. The temperature analysis is based on the power loss calculations and the loss factor computed by the 3-D electromagnetic simulation code GdfidL. To estimate the power loss, we analyze the real part of the longitudinal impedance and the loss factor for two different regimes. We use the ANSYS finite element code to correlate the temperature with the power loss. Lambertson and Shafer formalisms of the longitudinal and transverse beam impedances are discussed for the simplified stripline geometries. The required characteristic impedances and the geometric factors are determined analytically for the simplified geometries and compared with the results for the designed stripline geometry using the 2-D POISSON code by solving the Laplace’s equation in two dimensions. Lambertson’s equations are compared with numerical results. We introduce the frequency range, within which we can apply the analytical approach.
