Development of Ultrasonic and Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Non-Destruction Inspection of Aging Aircraft

Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) sensor detection system was continued and refined modifications were made in the data acquisition and evaluation process during the last year. The ultrasonic and FPI detection system was improved from one to multiple sensor detectors. Physical models were developed to understand the physical phenomenon of this work. Multilayered flawed samples were fabricated for inspection by a prototype ultrasonic and FPI detection. Experimental data was verified with simulated results. Undergraduate students that were associated with this research gained valuable knowledge from this experience. This was a learning process helping students to understand the importance of research and its application to solve important technological problems. As a result of our students exposure to this research two and planning to continue this type of research work in graduate school. A prototype instrument package was laboratory tested an actual airframe structure for documentation purposes.

Fiber optic sensors for corrosion detection

The development of fiber optic sensors for the detection of a variety of material parameters has grown tremendously over the past several years. Additionally, the potential for analytical applications of fiber optic sensors have become more widely used. New pH sensors have also been developed using fiber optic techniques to detect fluorescence characteristics from immobilized fluorogenic reagent chemicals. The primary purpose of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using fiber optic sensors to detect the presence of Al(sup 3+) ions made in the process of environmental corrosion of aluminum materials. The Al(sup 3+) ions plus a variety of other type of metal ions can be detected using analytical techniques along with fiber optic sensors.

Adhesive bond evaluation using phase sensitive detection techniques

Quadrature phase detection techniques have been used to monitor the amplitude and phase of a toneburst ultrasonic wave normally reflected from adhesively-bonded steel/rubber interface. The measured phase change values of the reflected signals were found to correlate with variations in sample preparation. It was determined that measured phase shift changes were larger for samples with weaker bonds as manifested by smaller measured values of the applied tensile loads at failure. A model calculation which incorporates the concept of interfacial strength into the usual problem of wave propagation in multi-layered isotropic elastic media was used to deduce a bond-quality parameter from an experimentally measured phase shift.
