The cavity pyrheliometer sensor of the Nimbus 7 Earth Radiation Experiment indicated low-level variability of the total solar irradiance. The variability appears to be inversely correlated with common solar activity indicators in an event sense. the limitations of the measuring system and available data sets are described.
In order to overcome the limitations of both IR/visible and microwave radiometer based techniques, a "hybrid' scheme is suggested whose accuracy is investigated using radar based simulations. Such a scheme could potentially combine the high temporal resolution of the vis/IR imagery with the anticipated rain rate estimating ability of the next generation of satelliteborne microwave radiometers.
Radiation budget data (which will aid in climate model development) and solar constant measurements (both to be used for the study of long term climate change and interannual seasonal weather variability) are presented, obtained during Nimbus-6 and Nimbus-7 satellite flights, using wide-field-of-view, scanner, and black cavity detectors. Data on the solar constant, described as a function of the date of measurement, are given. The unweighed mean amounts to 1377 + or - 20 per sq Wm, with a standard deviation of 8 per sq Wm. The new solar data are combined with earlier measurements, and it is suggested that the total absolute energy output of the sun is a minimum at 'solar maximum' and vice versa. Attention is given to the measurements of the net radiation budget, the planetary albedo, and the infrared radiant exitance. The annual and semiannual cycles of normal variability explain most of the variance of energy exchange between the earth and space. Examination of separate ocean and atmospheric energy budgets implies a net continent-ocean region energy exchange.
A technique is presented for discriminating different cloud types through an image subtraction of visible and infrared SMS/GOES picture pairs. The technique emphasizes how one could separate snow from clouds and identify cirrus by the subtraction method. Quantitative threshold values are shown which can be used in an objective manner to make this separation. Use is made of an all-digital image display device allowing such mathematical operations to be performed on satellite data. Techniques such as this can be made operational through the interfacing of the image analysis system with a direct-readout SMS/GOES ground station and distribution network.
The man-computer interactive data access system (McIDAS) hardware and software design is outlined, with emphasis on meteorological applications. The McIDAS system features a flexible digital image enhancement device. Theory of operation, the McIDAS language, the McIDAS executive monitor, image acquisition, image parameters, image display, graphics, image navigation, and image massaging are explained. The WINDCO/CLDHGT system, developed to align time sequences of geosynchronous satellite pictures and to determine the motion and height of selected cloud targets, is also described.
Discussion of the interactive man-computer system (WIMDCO) for measuring cloud motion from ATS pictures. The multipicture model of ATS navigation is used for consecutive ATS digital picture alignment to provide the required precision in cloud motion measurements by automated tracking techniques. Cloud motion is measured by tracking clouds between two digital pictures with the aid of two-dimensional cross correlation analysis. The fast Fourier transform method and other programming techniques are used for time and cost minimization. Cloud motion vectors were computed over three time intervals in July, 1969. The EW and NS components were reproducible within roughly 2 knots.
An interactive man-computer system, termed WINDCO, which was developed to measure cloud motions from pictures obtained by the ATS-I and ATS-III satellites, is described. The system will measure motions to at least three knots at moderate cost in a real-time environment. Accuracy could be improved by a factor of 4 by incorporating high-resolution visible SMS data.
