The Deep Eutectic Solvent Precipitation Synthesis of Metastable Zn 4 V 2 O 9

A precipitation method involving a deep eutectic solvent (DES)–a mixture of hydrogen bond donor and acceptor–is used to synthesize a ternary metal oxide. Without toxic reagents, precipitates consisting of Zn 3 (OH) 2 V 2 O 7 ·nH 2 O and Zn 5 (OH) 6 (CO 3 ) 2 are obtained by simply introducing deionized H 2 O to the DES solution containing dissolved ZnO and V 2 O 5 . Manipulation of the synthetic conditions demonstrates high tunability in the size/morphology of the two-dimensional nanosheets precipitated during the dynamic equilibrium process. According to differential scanning calorimetry and high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction, Zn 3 V 2 O 8 and ZnO obtained by the annealing of the precipitate are intermediates in the reaction pathway toward metastable Zn 4 V 2 O 9 . Intimate mixing of the metal precursors achieved by the precipitation method allows access to the metastable zinc-rich vanadate with unusually rapid heat treatment. Furthermore, the UV–vis and surface photovoltage spectra reveal the presence of sub-band gap states, stemming from the reduced vanadium (V 4+ ) center. Photoelectrochemical measurements confirm weak photoanodic currents for water and methanol oxidation. For the first time, this work shows the synthesis of a metastable oxide with the DES-precipitation route and provides insight into the structure–property relationship of the zinc-rich vanadate.

Fast and Non-Destructive Determination of Water Content in Ionic Liquids at Varying Temperatures by Raman Spectroscopy and Multivariate Regression Analysis

Imidazolium acetate ionic liquids (ILs) have been utilized as promising solvents in many applications that involve varying water content and temperature. These experimental variables affect the anion-cation intermolecular interactions, which in turn influence the performance of the ILs in these applications. Here, this paper shows Raman spectroscopy can be used as an operando method to measure water content in IL solvents when simultaneous temperature changes may occur. The Raman spectra of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ILs (alkyl chain length n = 2, 4, 6, 8) with varying water content (from 0.028 to 0.899 water mole fraction) and temperature (from 78.1 K to 423.1 K) were measured. Increasing the water content or decreasing the temperature of the tested ILs weakens the anion-cation intermolecular interactions. The water content of these ILs can be quantified even in conditions when the temperature is changing using Raman spectroscopy combined with multivariate regression analysis, including principal component regression (PCR), partial-least-squares regression (PLSR), and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The ANN model combined with partial-least-squares (PLS) achieves the highest prediction accuracy of water content in ILs at varying temperatures (RMSECV = 0.017, R 2 CV = 99.1%, RMSEP = 0.019, R 2 P = 98.8%, RPD = 8.93). Raman spectroscopy provides a potential fast non-destructive operando method to monitor the water content of ILs even in applications when the temperature may be simultaneously altered; this information can lead to the optimized use of these ILs in many applications.

Non-Innocent Role of the Ceria Support in Pd-Catalyzed Halophenol Hydrodehalogenation

The hydrodehalogenation (HDH) of halophenols is efficiently catalyzed by palladium supported on high-surface ceria (Pd/CeO2) under mild conditions (35 °C, 1 atm H2). A combination of NMR, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS studies and HDH kinetics of substituted halobenzenes suggests that the reaction proceeds mainly via a sequence of dissociative adsorption of phenolic hydroxyl onto the support, oxidative addition of the C–halogen bond to Pd, and reductive elimination to give phenol and hydrogen halide. The dissociative adsorption of the -OH group onto oxygen vacancies of the ceria support results in an electron-rich intermediate that facilitates the turnover-limiting reductive elimination step. In contrast, the direct pathway catalyzed by Pd without dissociative adsorption of the reactants on the support takes place at a slower rate. The mechanistic insights gained in this study were used to modify the reaction conditions for enabling HDH of recalcitrant halides such as fluorides and iodides.

Measuring Plant Metabolite Abundance in Spearmint ( Mentha spicata L.) with Raman Spectra to Determine Optimal Harvest Time

A fast field-deployable method utilizing Raman spectroscopy to determine the optimal harvest time of plants to extract the highest abundance of target metabolites is presented. Rosmarinic acid is a metabolite extracted from spearmint (Mentha spicata L.). Leaves from commercial “Native” and proprietary clonal line “KI110” spearmint were measured as a function of cell type and age to determine rosmarinic acid abundance. A linear regression model with leave-one-out cross-validation (R 2 CV = 0.61, RMSECV = 11.1 mg/g) was developed between selected Raman peak areas and rosmarinic acid concentrations determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A principal component analysis (PCA) model was also developed to determine rosmarinic acid abundance. The method may be suited to the analysis of many agriculturally relevant plant species and metabolites with distinct Raman peaks.

Protein-assisted scalable mechanochemical exfoliation of few-layer biocompatible graphene nanosheets

A facile method to produce few-layer graphene (FLG) nanosheets is developed using protein-assisted mechanical exfoliation. The predominant shear forces that are generated in a planetary ball mill facilitate the exfoliation of graphene layers from graphite flakes. The process employs a commonly known protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), which not only acts as an effective exfoliation agent but also provides stability by preventing restacking of the graphene layers. The latter is demonstrated by the excellent long-term dispersibility of exfoliated graphene in an aqueous BSA solution, which exemplifies a common biological medium. The development of such potentially scalable and toxin-free methods is critical for producing cost-effective biocompatible graphene, enabling numerous possible biomedical and biological applications. A methodical study was performed to identify the effect of time and varying concentrations of BSA towards graphene exfoliation. The fabricated product has been characterized using Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The BSA-FLG dispersion was then placed in media containing Astrocyte cells to check for cytotoxicity. It was found that lower concentrations of BSA-FLG dispersion had only minute cytotoxic effects on the Astrocyte cells.

Localization of Nonblinking Point Sources Using Higher-Order-Mode Detection and Optical Heterodyning: Developing a Strategy for Extending the Scope of Molecular, Super-resolution Imaging

While the stochastic, “blinking” nature of fluorescent systems has enabled the super-resolution of their localization by the fitting of their point-spread functions (PSFs), this strategy cannot be exploited for similar resolution of “nonblinking” systems, such as those that might be encountered in a coherent Raman experiment. An alternative method for subdiffraction-limited imaging lies in the exploitation of optical heterodyning. For example, if a Gaussian PSF (a TEM00 mode) of a point emitter is displaced with respect to the origin of the optical system, photons in the higher-order TEM modes carry information about that displacement. Information concerning the displacement can be extracted from photons in these higher-order modes. These photons can be collected by optical heterodyning, which exploits the large gain in a detector’s response to an optical signal from an emitter coupled to a local oscillator, which is prepared in the TEM of interest, e.g., TEM10. We have generalized and developed the heterodyning technique to localize point emitters via the detection of higher-order spatial modes. We have developed a theoretical approach to find a practical estimation limit of the localization parameters using a realistic model that accounts for shot noise, background noise, and Gaussian noise. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, we designed experiments in which a laser is a surrogate for one and two point emitters. Using the Fisher information and its accompanying Cramér-Rao lower bound, we demonstrate super-resolution localization in these cases: we show that objects can be localized to roughly 2–3 orders of magnitude of their point-spread function’s size for a given optical system. Finally and most importantly, it is suggested that the results will ultimately be generalizable to multiple emitters and, most importantly, to “nonblinking” molecular systems, which will be essential for broadening the scope of super-resolution measurements beyond the limits of fluorescence-based techniques.

Local Structural Disorder in Metavanadates MV 2 O 6 (M = Zn and Cu) Synthesized by the Deep Eutectic Solvent Route: Photoactive Oxides with Oxygen Vacancies

Metavanadates MV 2 O 6–δ (M = Zn and Cu) are synthesized by using a deep eutectic solvent (DES), a mixture of hydrogen bond donor and acceptor, as a reaction medium. Dissolution of stable binary metal oxides in a DES followed by a heat treatment yields phase-pure vanadates. According to in situ powder X-ray diffraction, ternary phases (α-Zn 2 V 2 O 7 and β-Cu 2–x V 2 O 7 , x ~ 0.27) are intermediates in the reaction pathway taken. Identifying a polymorphic phase transformation temperature for CuV 2 O 6 as well as the narrow temperature range between formation and decomposition for both metavanadates allows for tackling the challenge of the synthesis of these materials. The oxygen vacancy introduced by the DES route is accompanied by the formation of reduced V 4+ and Cu + in the oxide matrix, based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These oxygen vacancies modify the vibrational modes in the corresponding Raman spectra and are also responsible for broad optical absorptions in the 1.8–1.1 eV range. The optical band gaps of the materials are found at 1.8 eV (CuV 2 O 6 ) and 2.2 eV (ZnV 2 O 6 ), approximately 0.1–0.3 eV below the values reported in the literature. The reduced band gaps and sub-band gap photon absorption are key features of the oxygen-deficient metavanadates. Surface photovoltage spectroscopy reveals that all the synthesized vanadates are n-type materials with electrons as the majority charge carriers, and photoelectrochemical measurements confirm photoanodic currents for methanol oxidation. Furthermore, these results provide insight into the synthesis and structure–property relationship of the metavanadates for their potential use as photoanodes.

Unprecedented generation of 3D heterostructures by mechanochemical disassembly and re-ordering of incommensurate metal chalcogenides

Three-dimensional heterostructures are usually created either by assembling two-dimensional building blocks into hierarchical architectures or using stepwise chemical processes that sequentially deposit individual monolayers. Both approaches suffer from a number of issues, including lack of suitable precursors, limited reproducibility, and poor scalability of the preparation protocols. Therefore, development of alternative methods that enable preparation of heterostructured materials is desired. We create heterostructures with incommensurate arrangements of well-defined building blocks using a synthetic approach that comprises mechanical disassembly and simultaneous reordering of layered transition-metal dichalcogenides, MX 2 , and non-layered monochalcogenides, REX, where M = Ta, Nb, RE = Sm, La, and X = S, Se. We show that the discovered solid-state processes are rooted in stochastic mechanochemical transformations directed by electronic interaction between chemically and structurally dissimilar solids toward atomic-scale ordering, and offer an alternative to conventional heterostructuring. Details of composition–structure–properties relationships in the studied materials are also highlighted.

Spectral Narrowing Accompanies Enhanced Spatial Resolution in Saturated Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (CARS): Comparisons of Experiment and Theory

Here, we demonstrate theoretically and confirm experimentally the mechanism by which spectral narrowing accompanies enhanced spatial resolution in a saturated coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) signal that is demodulated at the third harmonic (3$f$) of the pump modulation frequency ($f$). Under these modulation conditions, theory predicts a narrowing of the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the CARS spectrum by a factor of 2.0 with respect to that of the spectrum obtained by demodulation at the fundamental frequency. Theory also predicts an improvement of spatial resolution by a factor of 1.7. Experimentally, narrowing of the FWHM of the CARS spectrum of 1,4-bis((E)-2-methylstyryl) benzene (MSB) crystals by a factor of 2.5 is observed upon saturation. Further experimental confirmation is provided from investigating diamond particles, for which spectral narrowing was enhanced by a factor of 2.8 and spatial resolution was enhanced by a factor of 2. Details of the mechanism and execution of the saturated CARS experiment are elucidated and limits to its applicability are suggested, one of which is the conclusion that the saturation approach is not suitable for extraction of harmonics beyond 3$f$ . In this work we have developed a more comprehensive understanding of the correlation between the observed experimental results and experimental factors than has been previously reported.
