Catalytic Hydrogenation of Alkylphenols for Renewable Caprolactone

Selective hydrogenation of lignin-derived alkyl-phenol to alkyl-cyclohexanone is a key step in the synthesis of renewable caprolactone from lignin-derived monomers. Selective hydrogenation of p-cresol, a model compound for lignin-derived monomers, to 4-methyl-cyclohexanone was conducted using Pd/γ-Al 2 O 3 in a continuous three-phase flow reactor with side products of 4-methyl cyclohexanol. High conversion (85%) and selectivity (>93%) were demonstrated at ambient reaction pressure. Evaluation of the hydrogenation at different reaction parameters showed that the reaction selectivity was determined by the surface coverage of p-cresol and 4-methyl cyclohexanone. Furthermore, high selectivity to 4-methyl cyclohexanone was also attributed to the lower apparent activation barrier of p-cresol hydrogenation (67 ± 2 kJ mol –1 ) compared to that of hydrogenation 4-methyl cyclohexanone (92 ± 11 kJ mol –1 ), with a faster rate of initial hydrogenation of p-cresol relative to carbonyl hydrogenation of 4-methyl-cyclohexanone.

Flexible and Extensive Platinum Ion Gel Condensers for Programmable Catalysis

Catalytic condensers composed of ion gels separating a metal electrode from a platinum-on-carbon active layer were fabricated and characterized to achieve more powerful, high surface area dynamic heterogeneous catalyst surfaces. Ion gels comprised of poly(vinylidene difluoride)/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide were spin coated as a 3.8 μm film on a Au surface, after which carbon sputtering of a 1.8 nm carbon film and electron-beam evaporation of 2 nm Pt clusters created an active surface exposed to reactant gases. Electronic characterization indicated that most charge condensed within the Pt nanoclusters upon application of a potential bias, with the condenser device achieving a capacitance of ∼20 μF/cm 2 at applied frequencies of up to 120 Hz. The maximum charge of ∼10 14 |e – | cm –2 was condensed under stable device conditions at 200 °C on catalytic films with ∼10 15 sites cm –2 . Grazing incidence infrared spectroscopy measured carbon monoxide adsorption isobars, indicating a change in the CO* binding energy of ∼19 kJ mol –1 over an applied potential bias of only 1.25 V. Condensers were also fabricated on flexible, large area Kapton substrates allowing stacked or tubular form factors that facilitate high volumetric active site densities, ultimately enabling a fast and powerful catalytic condenser that can be fabricated for programmable catalysis applications.

Overcoming the Entropy Penalty of Direct Air Capture for Efficient Gigatonne Removal of Carbon Dioxide

Atmospheric carbon poses an existential threat to civilization via global climate change. Hundreds of gigatonnes of carbon dioxide must be removed from earth’s atmosphere in the next three decades, necessitating a low-cost, energy-efficient process to extract low concentrations of carbon dioxide for conversion to a stable material permanently stored for thousands of years. In this work, the challenge of removing gigatonnes of CO 2 is described via the scale of effort and the thermodynamics of collecting and reducing this diffuse chemical, the accumulation of which imparts a substantial entropy penalty on any atmospheric carbon capture process. The methods of CO 2 reduction combined with upstream direct air capture (DAC) including absorption, membrane separation, and adsorption are compared with biomass torrefaction and permanent burial (BTB). A Monte Carlo model assesses the mass, energy, and economics of the full process of biomass torrefaction from biomass collection and transport to stable carbon burial to determine that 95% of scenarios could remove carbon for less than $200 per CO 2 -tonne-equivalent. Torrefied carbon is further discussed for its long-term stability and availability at the scale required to substantially mitigate the threat of climate change.
