Thermal Property Modeling and Assessment of the Physical Properties of FLiNaK

Here, the thermodynamic properties of the LiF–NaF–KF system and its subsystems were re-evaluated using the CALPHAD method, focusing on the deviations from ideality in the heat capacity [C p (T)] of mixtures, temperature-dependence of mixing enthalpies (Δ mix H), vapor pressures of mixtures, and enthalpies of fusion (ΔH fus ) using reported values and measurements. The results of this work confirmed a pseudoternary eutectic at 732.9 K and 46.5LiF–11.5NaF–42KF mol % (FLiNaK) with determined Cp(T) = 69.822 + 0.000679T + 2,137,152T –2 J mol –1 K –1 (732.9 < T < 1200 K) and ΔH fus = 18,051 J mol –1 in good agreement to the experimental values. The resulting accurate thermodynamic representation can be used to find relevant excess thermochemical properties in the whole pseudoternary space and provide insights into their composition and temperature dependence. A detailed evaluation of select thermophysical properties was also conducted to determine recommended density, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, vapor pressures, and boiling point with calculated uncertainties over the temperature range of interest for FLiNaK–salt energy applications.

Thermodynamic modeling with uncertainty quantification using the modified quasichemical model in quadruplet approximation: Implementation into PyCalphad and ESPEI

The modified quasichemical model in the quadruplet approximation (MQMQA) considers the first- and the second-nearest-neighbor coordination and interactions, particularly useful in describing short-range ordering (SRO) in complex liquids such as molten salts, slag in metal processing, and electrolytic solutions. Here, the present work implements the MQMQA into the Python based open-source software PyCalphad for thermodynamic calculations. This endeavor facilitates the development of MQMQA-based thermodynamic database with uncertainty quantification (UQ) and propagation (UP) using the open-source software ESPEI. A new database structure based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) is proposed for ESPEI evaluation of MQMQA model parameters. Using the KF-NiF 2 , KCl-NaCl-MgCl 2 , and CaCl 2 -CaF 2 -LiCl-LiF salt systems as examples, we demonstrate the successful implementation of MQMQA in PyCalphad through thermodynamic calculations of Gibbs energy, equilibrium quadruplet fractions, and phase diagram, as well as database development with UQ and UP using ESPEI. Furthermore, as an application of the present implementation, both the LiF–TbF 3 and LiF-HoF 3 systems have been modeled by MQMQA for the first time, which are in good agreement with experiments. The present implementation hence offers an open-source capability for performing CALPHAD modeling for complex liquids with SRO using MQMQA plus a new XML database structure.

Thermodynamic re-modeling of the Yb-Sb system aided by first-principles calculations

Here, the thermodynamic description of the Yb-Sb binary system is developed by means of the CALculations of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) method by combining experimental data in the literature and predictions from first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) in the literature and the present work. Two pseudopotentials of Yb are compared in the present DFT-based calculations with 14 and 13 f-electrons frozen in the core, i.e., 5p 6 6s 2 and 5p 6 6s 2 5 d 1 electrons as valence electrons, termed Yb_2 and Yb_3, respectively. It is shown that the phonon spectrum of the YbSb phase calculated using the Yb_3 pseudopotential does not have imaginary phonon modes and is subsequently used to predict its temperature dependent thermodynamic properties by the DFT-based quasiharmonic phonon calculations. The present thermodynamic database includes the Yb 16 Sb 11 phase in addition to five intermetallic phases that were considered in previous modeling studies, i.e., YbSb 2 , YbSb, Yb 11 Sb 10 , Yb 4 Sb 3 , and Yb 5 Sb 3 . The high temperature orthorhombic structure of the Yb 5 Sb 3 phase is not considered in the present work as it was stabilized by hydrogen. The associate solution model is used to describe the short-range ordering behavior in the liquid phase. The calculations from the present thermodynamic model show good agreement with thermochemical and phase equilibrium data from both the present work and the literature.

Thermodynamic properties of Ca–Pb electrodes determined by electromotive force measurements

Thermodynamic properties of Ca–Pb alloys are investigated by electromotive force (emf) measurements to determine equilibrium cell potentials and phase properties for their application in energy storage systems such as liquid metal batteries. Using the electrochemical cell Ca(s) | CaF 2 (s) | Ca(in Pb) at 700–1060 K, cell emf is measured for thirteen Ca–Pb alloys at mole fractions, x Ca = 0.06–0.80. At 873 K, the equilibrium potentials of liquid Ca–Pb alloys are 0.57–0.62 V versus Ca and the activity values are as low as a Ca = 6.2 × 10 -8 at x Ca = 0.06. In addition, the emf values as a function of temperature provide partial molar quantities (entropy and enthalpy) as well as phase transitions which are corroborated by determining transition temperatures and phase constituents using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). This study establishes the fundamental data necessary for the design of Pb-containing liquid metal electrodes through the integration of electrochemical, thermal, and structural properties of Ca–Pb electrodes.
