Differential Correction Schemes in Nonlinear Regression

Classical iterative methods in nonlinear regression are reviewed and improved upon. This is accomplished by discussion of the geometrical and theoretical motivation for introducing modifications using generalized matrix inversion. Examples having inherent pitfalls are presented and compared in terms of results obtained using classical and modified techniques. The modification is shown to be useful alone or in conjunction with other modifications appearing in the literature.

Investigation of estimators of probability density functions

Four research projects are summarized which include: (1) the generation of random numbers on the IBM 360/44, (2) statistical tests used to check out random number generators, (3) Specht density estimators, and (4) use of estimators of probability density functions in analyzing large amounts of data.

Investigation of the Specht density estimator

The feasibility of using the Specht density estimator function on the IBM 360/44 computer is investigated. Factors such as storage, speed, amount of calculations, size of the smoothing parameter and sample size have an effect on the results. The reliability of the Specht estimator for normal and uniform distributions and the effects of the smoothing parameter and sample size are investigated.

Computer programs and documentation

Various statistical tests that were used to check out random number generators are described. A total of twelve different tests were considered, and from these, six were chosen to be used. The frequency test, max t test, run test, lag product test, gap test, and the matrix test are included.
