Space Telescope design status and operations

The Space Telescope design concept is described in the context of the basic mission objectives. The orbiting telescope is designed to have 10 times better resolution, to see 50 times fainter stars and to have a much broader spectral range than the best existing ground observatories. The project is on schedule for launch in early 1985. Hardware assembly and test has started on the optical system, and the primary and secondary mirrors have been polished and coated. The five scientific instruments are beginning hardware assembly. The last major design review for the spacecraft has been completed, and good progress has been accomplished with the implementation of the pointing control system. The mission operations ground system has been defined and is under development. Control center design is complete and the science institute is under construction. The Space Telescope is designed to be serviceable in orbit and will be capable of return to the ground for refurbishment.

HEAO - Signature of a successful space science program

The HEAO (High Energy Astronomy Observatory) Program consists of three large automated scientific observatories launched between 1977 and 1979 to observe from near-earth orbit stellar X-ray and gamma-ray sources and to measure incoming cosmic ray particles. The HEAO-2 and HEAO-3 spacecraft are expected to exceed their design lifetimes by a factor of three, as did HEAO-1, which operated for 18 months. All three missions are considered successful in that target dates have essentially been met, launch and flight operations have been relatively smooth, instrumentation has performed well, and there have been no cost overruns. The paper lists ten factors contributing to the missions' success, among them a thorough definition before program start, commonality of spacecraft design, redundancy of mission critical equipment, ample design margins, and tight control of system changes. Specific mission parameters are included in the paper as well as the technological advances engendered by the HEAO Program in such areas as high-resolution X-ray optics and solid-state spectrometry.

HEAO-A - The first high energy astronomy observatory

The early major findings of the four HEAO-A cosmic X-ray and gamma-ray experiments will be discussed. A comparative analysis of the actual and expected instrument performance will be presented. The unique contributions of high energy astrophysics to the study of the universe will be highlighted with specific HEAO-A observations. Plans for the ongoing observations will be shown. The observatory capabilities will be briefly compared with those of previous satellites.
