Strain localization during deformation of Westerly granite

A specimen of Westerly granite was cyclically loaded to near failure at 50 MPa confining pressure. Holographic interferometry provided detailed measurements of localized surface deformations during loading and unloading. The data are consistent with deformation occurring primarily elastically at low differential stress; in conjunction with one incipient fault zone between approximately 350 and 520 MPa differential stress; and in conjunction with a second incipient fault zone above 580 MPa and/or during creep. During unloading only one fault zone, that which is active at the intermediate stress levels during loading, is seen to recede.

The contribution of activated processes to Q

The possible role of activated processes in seismic attenuation is investigated. In this study, a solid is modeled by a parallel and series configuration of dashpots and springs. The contribution of stress and temperature activated processes to the long term dissipative behavior of this system is analyzed. Data from brittle rock deformation experiments suggest that one such process, stress corrosion cracking, may make a significant contribution to the attenuation factor, Q, especially for long period oscillations under significant tectonic stress.

Application of holographic interferometry to high pressure experiments

The principles of operation of holographic interferometry are reviewed, and some considerations affecting the design of high-pressure experiments using this technique are discussed. Some applications of holographic interferometry in high-pressure experiments are described, including strain measurements, investigation of failure phenomena, and investigation of piston rotation and sample bending in the early stages of a supposed uniaxial compression test. Specific attention is given to an experiment in which holographic interferometry was used to study the deformation of a jacketed rock sample while it was stressed to failure.

Compressional velocity measurements for a highly fractured lunar anorthosite

The compressional wave (V sub p) velocities in three mutually perpendicular directions have been measured in lunar sample 60025,174, lunar anorthosite. V sub p measurements were made at ambient temperature and pressure and a new technique was developed to measure the velocities because of the tremendous acoustic wave attenuation of the lunar sample. The measured velocities were all less than 1 km/sec and displayed up to a 21% departure from the mean value of the three directions. The velocities agree with seismic wave velocities determined for the lunar surface at the collection site.
