VAPRE: A tool to support the design optimization of planetary entry probe missions

The importance of the atmospheric data collected by planetary entry probes has been emphasized since the results of Galileo in 1995 and are reflected in the interest . The results add to our fundamental understanding about the formation and the evolution of our solar system. Of special interest are the Outer Planets Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, serving as missing puzzle pieces to the existing data sets. In order to maximize the data and science return from those missions, the tool VAPRE is developed to facilitate the design optimization of planetary entry probe missions by increasing the trade-space. Using a data set of interplanetary trajectories, it assesses the change in availability and accessibility of entry sites on the planets with respect to their latitudes depending on the hyperbolic arrival velocity. In this paper, we introduce the motivation behind the implementation of VAPRE, the science and engineering input gathered to bridge the knowledge between both fields, the design structure of the implementation as well as the significance and future development and potential of the tool VAPRE for future mission concept developments for planetary probe and lander missions.

Workshop Report on Ares V Solar System Science

The workshop blended three major themes: (1) How can elements of the Constellation program, and specifically, the planned Ares-V heavy-launch vehicle, benefit the planetary community by enabling the launch of large planetary payloads that cannot be launched on existing vehicles, and how can the capabilities of an Ares V allow the planetary community to redesign missions to achieve lower risk, and perhaps lower cost on these missions? (2) What are some of the planetary missions that either can be significantly enhanced or enabled by an Ares-V launch vehicle? What constraints do these mission concepts place on the payload environment of the Ares V? (3) Technology challenges that need to be addressed for launching large planetary payloads. Presentations varied in length from 15-40 minutes. Ample time was provided for discussion.

Assessment of Alternative Europa Mission Architectures

The purpose of this study was to assess the science merit, technical risk and qualitative assessment of relative cost of alternative architectural implementations as applied to a first dedicated mission to Europa. The objective was accomplished through an examination of mission concepts resulting from previous and ongoing studies. Key architectural elements that were considered include moon orbiters, flybys (single flybys like New Horizons and multiple flybys similar to the ongoing Jupiter System Observer study), sample return and in situ landers and penetrators.

Solar-Powered Europa Orbiter Design Study (2007)

The feasibility of implementing a solar-powered mission around Europa has been evaluated periodically over the last decade. Most recently, an assessment was performed as part of the 2006 Europa Explorer (EE) Study, which evaluated the practicality of implementing that mission design with large solar arrays instead of radioisotope power systems (RPS). This previous study went into some depth in considering the issues related to the use of solar arrays in the Europa orbit illumination and radiation environment. The study concluded that an all-solar option was impractical to meet the science objectives as defined in that study by the science team. This conclusion resulted from the prohibitive mass, packaging and articulation issues associated with the very large (approx.300 sq m) solar arrays required to accommodate frequent eclipse periods associated with the particular Europa orbit used.
