Evolution of microscopic heterogeneity and dynamics in choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are an emerging class of non-aqueous solvents that are potentially scalable, easy to prepare and functionalize for many applications ranging from biomass processing to energy storage technologies. Predictive understanding of the fundamental correlations between local structure and macroscopic properties is needed to exploit the large design space and tunability of DESs for specific applications. Here, we employ a range of computational and experimental techniques that span length-scales from molecular to macroscopic and timescales from picoseconds to seconds to study the evolution of structure and dynamics in model DESs, namely Glyceline and Ethaline, starting from the parent compounds. We show that systematic addition of choline chloride leads to microscopic heterogeneities that alter the primary structural relaxation in glycerol and ethylene glycol and result in new dynamic modes that are strongly correlated to the macroscopic properties of the DES formed.

Refined Classical Force Field for Choline Chloride and Ethylene Glycol Mixtures over Wide Composition Range

In this work, a classical force field based on the General Amber Force Field (GAFF) was refined for the simulation of choline chloride (ChCl) and ethylene glycol (EG) mixtures over a wide composition range by scaling the partial charges and van der Waals parameters. The scaling factors were derived by fitting the simulation results to only eight experimental density and viscosity data points of pure EG, and ChCl/EG mixtures at 1:2, 1:4, and 1:6 molar ratios. Using the refined force field, properties essential for electrochemical applications such as density, viscosity, self-diffusion coefficient, and ionic conductivity were calculated, and excellent agreement to experimental results was found even for compositions and temperatures not used in the fitting procedure. In addition, new experimental data for density, viscosity, and ionic conductivity are reported as a function of temperature and composition for this mixture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first classical force field developed for the study of ChCl/EG mixtures over a composition range that includes the eutectic point. Using the new model, the liquid dynamics was studied in terms of ionic conductivity. It was found that the dynamics in ChCl/EG mixtures with ChCl mole fraction higher than 20% is similar to that of ionic liquids, high temperature molten salts, and highly concentrated water-in-salt electrolytes.

From Salt in Solution to Solely Ions: Solvation of Methyl Viologen in Deep Eutectic Solvents and Ionic Liquids

Solvation and transport properties of methlyviologen dichloride in mixtures of choline chloride (ChCl) and ethylene glycol (EG) including the deep eutectic solvent (DES) ethaline were studied through physical property measurements, cyclic voltammetry, and Raman spectroscopy. The transport properties of the solvate structures in ethaline and ChCl:EG mixtures were compared to a well-studied ionic liquid (IL), 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [PYR 13 ][TFSI] through the lens of hole theory. Here by exchanging the chloride anion of ethaline with bis(trifuoromethylsufonyl)imide) anion, [TFSI], is found to increase the fluidity of the solvent and promoted stronger solute-solvent interactions. Raman spectroscopy shows that methylviologen is solvated by EG in solutions with ChTFSI but interstitially accommodated in void spaces in both ChCl solutions and [PYR 13 ][TFSI]. Here, complex solvents such as DESs are regarded as “designer solvents” and we demonstrate that the physical properties and solvation characteristics of these fluids can be varied by anion exchange of hydrogen bond acceptors.

Liquid Structure and Transport Properties of the Deep Eutectic Solvent Ethaline

A range of techniques including physical property measurements, neutron scattering experiments, ab initio molecular dynamics, and classical molecular dynamics simulations are used to probe the structural, thermodynamic, and transport properties of a deep eutectic solvent comprised of a 1:2 molar ratio of choline chloride and ethylene glycol. This mixture, known as Ethaline, has many desirable properties for use in a range of applications, and therefore, understanding its liquid structure and transport properties is of interest. Simulation results are able to capture experimental densities, diffusivities, viscosities, and structure factors extremely well. Here, the solvation environment is dynamic and dominated by different hydrogen bonding interactions. Dynamic heterogeneities resulting from hydrogen bonding interactions are quantified. Rotational dynamics of molecular dipole moments of choline and ethylene glycol are computed and found to exhibit a fast and slow mode.
