Plasticizer for polymide composites

Problem of maintaining good prepreg tack and drape has been solved by modification of addition polymide. Tack and drape are ability of prepreg to adhere to adjacent plies and to conform to desired shape during layup process. Alternate approach allows both longer life of polymer prepreg and processing of low-void laminates. It appears to be applicable to all addition polymide systems. Modified addition polymide takes advantage of reactive liquid plasticizer, monoethylphthalate, which is used in place of solvent. Because of low vapor pressure of reactive liquid, it is retained and, thereby, tack and flexibility of prepreg are retained.

High-temperature adhesives for polyimide films

Linear condensation polyimides which are high-temperature polymers show promise as adhesives which form flexible film coatings compatible with polyimide films. Materials are advantageous since they can be supplied as flexible tape, already B-staged and ready for bonding.

Polyimide adhesives for titanium and composite bonding

Approach results in synthesis of addition polyimide adhesives with exceptional high temperature capabilities that show excellent potential for bonding titanium metal, polyimide/graphite composites, and combinations of these materials. Adhesives compatible with materials used in high performance aircraft and spacecraft structures also prove highly desirable in many other applications involving similar adherents.

Soluble, thermally-stable aromatic polyimides

Solubility of aromatic polyimides in organic solvents is increased by additions of dianhydride monomers and substituted diamines. Thermal stability of polymers is retained.

New diamine hardeners for epoxies

Stronger amine-cured polyepoxides can be obtained by using those diaminobenzophenones and diaminodiphenylmethanes that have amine groups located at ortho or meta positions to carbonyl or methylene groups joining two benzene rings.

Lightweight orthotic appliances

Graphite-filament reinforced polymer materials are used in applications requiring high tensile strength and modulus. Superior properties of graphite composite materials permit fabrication of supports that are considerably lighter, thinner, and stiffer than conventional components.

LaRC-160 - A new 550 F polyimide laminating resin

A new addition polyimide, LaRC-160, based on liquid monomers has been prepared. The essentially solventless prepreg retains good drape and tack. Unidirectional HT-S composites were fabricated and tested before and after aging at temperatures between 505 K and 589 K (450 F and 600 F). Excellent retention of mechanical properties was realized after 2000 hours at 547 K (525 F). This material should be a candidate for solventless prepregging due to the liquid nature of the monomeric mixture.

Process for preparing polyimide adhesives

High bonding strengths are obtained for metals and fiber-reinforced organic resin composites with no significant loss in thermo-oxidative stability of the adhesive resin.

Diamine curing agents for polyurethanes

Three aromatic diamines have properties that make them promising candidates as curing agents for converting isocyanates to polyurethanes with higher adhesive strengths, higher softening temperatures, better toughness, and improved abrasion resistance.
