Computer Program Helps Enhance Images

Pixel Pusher is Macintosh application program for viewing and performing minor enhancements on imagery. Works with color images digitized to 8 bits. Reads image files in JPL's two primary image formats VICAR and PDS as well as in Macintosh PICT format. VICAR (NPO-18076) handles array of image-processing capabilities used for variety of applications, including processing of biomedical images, cartography, imaging of Earth resources, and geological exploration. Pixel Pusher also imports color lookup tables in VICAR format for viewing images in pseudocolor (256 colors). Written in Symantec's Think C.

Using image pyramids for the visualization of large terrain data sets

Viewing terrain data from various remote sensors in three dimensions has proven to be a valuable tool for scientists in understanding a variety of problems. A technique is presented for using image pyramids in such visualization of large terrain data sets, providing up to two orders of magnitude performance enhancement over simpler techniques, while at the same time eliminating false high-frequency information, which causes animations to sparkle.

VICAR/IBIS Software System

Collection of programs provides extensive capabilities for manipulation of imagery and geographical data. VICAR/IBIS software system is combination of JPL VICAR (Video Image Communications and Retrieval System) image-processing system and JPL IBIS (Image Based Information System) geographic-information-management system. Provides user with extensive general-purpose image-processing capabilities, also information-management system for accepting, converting, and operating on vector (graphical) and tabular data. System used to perform various image processing functions on any sort of digitized image data, including such remotely sensed data as those from Landsat multispectral scanner.
