Emittance Measurements with Wire Scanners in the Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac

The Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac accelerates H- beam from 116 MeV to 400 MeV through seven 805 MHz modules. Twelve wire scanners are present in the Side Coupled Linac and four are present in the transfer line between the Linac and the Booster synchrotron ring. These wire scanners act as important diagnostic instru-ments to directly collect information on the beam s transverse distribution. The manipulation of the condi-tions of wire scanner data collection enables further characterization of the beamline, such as calculating emittance and the Twiss parameters of the beam at select regions. Here we present the results of these studies and characterization of the non-Gaussian transverse beam distribution observed.

Wire scanner assessment of transverse beam size in the Fermilab side-coupled linac

The Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac contains seven 805 MHz modules accelerating H- beam from 116 MeV to 400 MeV. Each module contains at least one wire scanner, yielding beam intensity at positions along a transverse direction. These wire scanners each contain three wires, mounted at different angles: "X", "Y", and 45° between "X" and "Y" to analyze coupling. Recently, a significant amount of transverse X-Y coupling was identified within wire scanner data from the Side-Coupled Linac, which has been present in data from the past decade. This realization has prompted an investigation into the wire scanner's utility as a diagnostic tool in the Fermilab Linac. This work presents efforts to better characterize the wire scanners' limitations and the phenomenon occurring in the Side-Coupled Linac.

Development of a Web-Based Graphical User Interface for Fermilab Robots

This project provides the students/faculty team with the unique opportunity to work with several robots. Additionally, the student team will be able to learn from the experience of the Robotics Initiative members who have a wide variety of technical backgrounds outside of software development. Working with an interdisciplinary group to solve a complex problem that is unique to our facility, is a valuable experience that the lab can provide. This project aligns with the ACORN projects R&D efforts regarding the integration of robotics status/control with the accelerator control system.
