Magnetic order of tetragonal CuO ultrathin films

Here, we present a detailed low-energy muon spin rotation and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) investigation of the magnetic structure in ultrathin tetragonal (T)-CuO films. The measured muon-spin polarization decay indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a transition temperature higher than 200 K. The XMCD signal obtained around the CuL 2,3 edges indicates the presence of pinned Cu 2+ moments that are parallel to the sample surface, and additionally, isotropic paramagnetic moments. The pinning of some of the Cu moments is caused by an AFM ordering consisting of moments that lie most likely in plane of the film. Moreover, pinned moments show a larger orbital magnetic moment contribution with an approximate ratio of m orb /m spin =1.5, indicating that these spins are located at sites with reduced symmetry. Some fractions of the pinned moments remain pinned from an AFM background even at 360 K, indicating that T N >360K. We propose a simple model that explains these experimental findings, showing that the magnetic order of the T-CuO ultrathin films differs from the theoretical predictions.

Nonequilibrium charge-density-wave order beyond the thermal limit

The interaction of many-body systems with intense light pulses may lead to novel emergent phenomena far from equilibrium. Recent discoveries, such as the optical enhancement of the critical temperature in certain superconductors and the photo-stabilization of hidden phases, have turned this field into an important research frontier. Here, we demonstrate nonthermal charge-density-wave (CDW) order at electronic temperatures far greater than the thermodynamic transition temperature. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and time-resolved X-ray diffraction, we investigate the electronic and structural order parameters of an ultrafast photoinduced CDW-to-metal transition. Tracking the dynamical CDW recovery as a function of electronic temperature reveals a behaviour markedly different from equilibrium, which we attribute to the suppression of lattice fluctuations in the transient nonthermal phonon distribution. A complete description of the system’s coherent and incoherent order-parameter dynamics is given by a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau framework, providing access to the transient potential energy surfaces.

Correlations between electronic order and structural distortions and their ultrafast dynamics in the single-layer manganite P r 0.5 C a 1.5 Mn O 4

Time-resolved x-ray diffraction experiments on the half-doped single-layered manganite Pr 0.5 Ca 1.5 Mn O 4 are used to monitor the ultrafast photoinduced dynamics of the structural distortion associated with the charge and orbital ordering (CO/OO). As in the nonlayered three-dimensional counterpart, the ordered phase melts in less than 100 fs after 800-nm photoexcitation and subsequently partially recovers due to thermal equilibration of electronic and vibrational systems. Photoexciting Pr 0.5 Ca 1.5 Mn O 4 below the transition temperature of a second structural phase transition that occurs around 146 K (deep inside the CO/OO phase) releases this structural transition, but progresses on a much slower timescale. Finally, this additional reduction of crystal symmetry, which we ascribe to a further tilt of the oxygen octahedra, can thus be considered to be only weakly coupled to CO/OO. Furthermore, static hard-x-ray and resonant soft-x-ray diffraction at the Mn L 2,3 edges experiments identify correlations between structural distortions and electronic order in thermal equilibrium.
