State of battery health estimation based on swelling characteristics

There is disclosed an electrical device including a battery, and a battery management system. The battery management system includes a controller in electrical communication with a pressure sensor to monitor the state of health of the battery. The controller applies a method for determining the state of health that uses a non-electrical (mechanical) signal of force measurements combined with incremental capacity analysis to estimate the capacity fading and other health indicators of the battery with better precision than existing methods. The pressure sensor may provide the force measurement signal to the controller, which may determine which incremental capacity curve based on force to use for the particular battery. The controller then executes a program utilizing the data from the pressure sensor and the stored incremental capacity curves based on force to estimate the capacity fading and signal a user with the state of health percentage.

Review—“Knees” in Lithium-Ion Battery Aging Trajectories

Lithium-ion batteries can last many years but sometimes exhibit rapid, nonlinear degradation that severely limits battery lifetime. In this work, we review prior work on “knees” in lithium-ion battery aging trajectories. We first review definitions for knees and three classes of “internal state trajectories” (termed snowball, hidden, and threshold trajectories) that can cause a knee. We then discuss six knee “pathways”, including lithium plating, electrode saturation, resistance growth, electrolyte and additive depletion, percolation-limited connectivity, and mechanical deformation—some of which have internal state trajectories with signals that are electrochemically undetectable. Additionally, we also identify key design and usage sensitivities for knees. Finally, we discuss challenges and opportunities for knee modeling and prediction. Our findings illustrate the complexity and subtlety of lithium-ion battery degradation and can aid both academic and industrial efforts to improve battery lifetime.

Detection of an internal short circuit in a battery

An electrical device comprises a battery cell; a pressure sensor for measuring swelling forces of the battery cell, optionally with voltage, temperature and current sensors, and a battery management system including a controller. The controller executes a program to: (i) determine a reference swelling force corresponding to a reference electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at an earlier reference time, (ii) determine a second swelling force corresponding to a second electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at a later second time, and (iii) determine whether a risk of internal short circuit of the battery cell exists by comparing a reference level of the reference electrical signal and a signal representative of the second electrical signal. When the signal representative of the second electrical signal exceeds the reference level of the reference electrical signal by a threshold amount, a risk of internal short circuit of the cell exists.

Co-Optimization of Velocity and Charge-Depletion for Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Accounting for Acceleration and Jerk Constraints

Abstract Recent advances in vehicle connectivity and automation technologies promote advanced control algorithms that co-optimize the longitudinal dynamics and powertrain operation of hybrid electric vehicles. Typically, a sequential optimization with the vehicle dynamics optimized followed by powertrain optimization is adopted to manage a number of complexities such as the inherent mixed-integer nature of the hybrid powertrain, the numerous state and control variables, the differing time scales of vehicle and powertrain subsystems, time-varying state constraints, and large horizon lengths. Instead, we solve the offline optimization problem in a centralize manner assuming exact knowledge of the lead vehicle's position over the entire trip by applying a discrete-time single shooting-based numerical approach, Discrete Mixed-Integer Shooting (DMIS), including a linearly increasing computational complexity to the problem horizon. In particular, the hierarchical problem structure is exploited to decompose the computationally intensive Hamiltonian minimization step into a set of low-dimensional optimizations. DMIS allows us to compute the direct fuel minimization problem including the vehicle and powertrain dynamics in a centralized manner to its full horizon while systematically tuning weighting factors that penalize passenger discomfort. For the first time, this study reveals that practically implemented sequential optimization exhibits similar fuel optimality as co-optimization when a certain level of passenger comfort is required.

Real time trajectory optimization for hybrid energy management utilizing connected information technologies

The disclosure is directed to solving a full trajectory optimization problem in real-time for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) such that future driving conditions and energy usage may be fully considered in determining optimal engine energy usage and battery energy usage in real-time during a trip. An electronic control unit of the HEV may be configured to: receive route information for a route to be driven by the HEV; and after receiving the route information, iterating the operations of: measuring a current state of charge (SOC) of the battery; using at least the measured SOC and an initial co-state value stored in a memory, performing a process to iteratively update the co-state value to obtain an updated co-state value; using at least the updated co-state value, computing an updated control value; and applying the updated control value to control a usage of the battery and the internal combustion engine.
