Automatic-Control System for Safer Brazing

Automatic-control system for radio-frequency (RF) induction brazing of metal tubing reduces probability of operator errors, increases safety, and ensures high-quality brazed joints. Unit combines functions of gas control and electric-power control. Minimizes unnecessary flow of argon gas into work area and prevents electrical shocks from RF terminals. Controller will not allow power to flow from RF generator to brazing head unless work has been firmly attached to head and has actuated micro-switch. Potential shock hazard eliminated. Flow of argon for purging and cooling must be turned on and adjusted before brazing power applied. Provision ensures power not applied prematurely, causing damaged work or poor-quality joints. Controller automatically turns off argon flow at conclusion of brazing so potentially suffocating gas does not accumulate in confined areas.

Reusable High-Pressure Connector

Fluid line connector for high pressure tests has split ferrule, nut, and O-ring seal. Following test, ferrule nut, and O-ring fitting are removed leaving line unaltered except for bushing braze to free end. Connector assures strong joint for high-pressure testing without redundant parts requiring postest debrazing.

Staking Tool for Hard Metals

Simple tool stakes hard-steel parts--that is, forces one part into recess on another, deforming receiving part so that it restrains inserted one. Tool allows small machine shops to stake hard steel without massive presses. Can be used, for example, to insert ball and spring into hard steel snap-tool body such as that used to turn socket wrenches. Use is not limited to hard steel; can be used as well to assemble parts made of softer materials.

Tool Blunts Cotter Pin Legs for Safety

Jaws on new insertion tool contain upset point and anvil. Point forces cotter-pin legs into loop as it engages anvil. Cotter pin before insertion consists of loop and straight shaft composed of two legs welded together as tips. After insertion, welded legs have been shaped into loop. Tool used to prevent bent loose ends of cotter pins from scratching workers' fingers or cutting and entangling wires.

Time-sharing switch for vacuum brazing

Switching unit changes power and cooling-water connections between two vacuum-brazing machines. It allows both units to be powered by single radio-frequency (RF) generator. One machine can be used for brazing while bell jar of other is being evacuated (20 minute process) in preparation for brazing or is being cooled after brazing (10 minute process).

Time-shaped RF brazing

One RF generator is controlled from two independent work stations with aid of RF switch and simple control boxes. Brazing may be stopped manually or automatically by external brazing-temperature controller or timer in RF switch housing. Switch is air-operated with water-cooled contacts. If switch loses air pressure, generator stops transmitting power. Time-shared outlet increases utilization and productivity of costly RF generator.

Torque-wrench extender for hard-to-reach fasteners

Extension kit for torque wrench tightens and loosens captive fasteners in hard-to-reach places. Kit consists of four universal socket joints and extender rod enclosed in greased-packed tube. Extension kit replaces snap-on adapter and flexible drive shaft.

Frozen-fluid line repair

Improved line-freezing equipment permits fluid line repairs in previously inaccessible areas.

Automatic soldering machine

Fully-automatic tube-joint soldering machine can be used to make leakproof joints in aluminum tubes of 3/16 to 2 in. in diameter. Machine consists of temperature-control unit, heater transformer and heater head, vibrator, and associated circuitry controls, and indicators.

Glass tube splitting tool

Tool accurately splits glass tubing so cuts are aligned 180 deg apart and reassembled tube forms low pressure, gastight enclosure. Device should interest industries using cylindrical closed glass containers.

Torch kit for welding in difficult areas

Miniature tungsten inert gas welding torch, used with variously formed interchangeable soft copper tubing extensions, provides inexpensive, accurate welding capability for inaccessible joints. Kit effectively welds stainless steel tubing 0.089 cm thick. Other applications are cited.

Special wrench for B-nuts reduces torque stress in tubing

Gear-driven torque wrench with bearing support is used to tighten B-nut connection of partially supported fluid line with minimum stress to adjacent tubing and fittings. Wrench is useful for working with weak or brittle lines such as glass tubing.

High pressure tube coupling requires no threads or flares

High pressure tube coupling connects to any straight, unthreaded, and unflared tubing end without deforming or damaging the tubing. The coupling grips the tube wall tightly between an external compression sleeve and an internal hollow mandrel. It is adaptable to standard screw fittings for test stand attachment.
