X-ray and Gamma-ray Observations of the COS-B Field 2CG 075+00

We present a summary of gamma-ray and X-ray observations of the intriguing COS-B field, 2CG 075+00, in order to search for potential counterparts. The third EGRET (Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope) (3EG) catalog shows that the COS-B emission corresponds to at least two localized gamma-ray sources, 3EG 2016+3657 and 3EG J2021+3716. We present analyses of archival X-ray fields which overlap error boxes of both the EGRET sources.

Performance and design of the ultraviolet spectrometer and polarimeter on the solar maximum mission

The instrument observes spectral line intensity, Doppler motions, and polarization parameters. First Dopplergrams of the sun showing mass motion of prominences have been obtained. The instrument consists of a telescope, a spectrometer, a polarimeter, and five detectors. Spectral range extends from 1150 to 3600 Angstroms. The telescope is an alphanatic Gregorian capable of scanning a 256 x 256 arcsecond raster. The spectrometer is an Ebert-Fastie mount with exchangeable slits for intensity measurements and spectroscopy. Detectors are photomultipliers operating in the pulse-counting mode.

Models of the earth's electric field

Detailed models of the electric field of the magnetosphere are derived in several stages. For all, the conductivity along field lines is assumed to be high enough to ensure the vanishing of E B everywhere except in the ionosphere. At first the rotation of the earth is ignored completely and a simple model is constructed which fits certain observed properties. Next, the rotation of the earth is taken into account, but the field is assumed to be that of a magnetic dipole rotating around its symmetry axis. This allows the concept of the electric potential to be retained, which permits the derivation of interesting properties including the use of a conjugate potential which paces the drift of charged particles in the field. Finally, the general case involving asymmetrical rotation is briefly discussed.

A brushless dc spin motor for momentum exchange altitude control

Brushless dc spin motor is designed to use Hall effect probes as means of revolving rotor position and controlling motor winding currents. This results in 3 to 1 reduction in watt-hours required for wheel acceleration, a 2 to 1 reduction in power to run wheel, and a 10 to 1 reduction in the electronics size and weight.

Charged particle motion in the vicinity of a neutral plane

The motion of a charged particle in a 2-dimensional neutral sheet with linear magnetic field variation is analyzed by Hamiltonian methods. From the basic Hamiltonian formulation, results of Sonnerup are recovered and given intuitive interpretation. The transformed Hamiltonian is used to derive the correct frequency of oscillation and serves as the basis of analytical treatment of perturbed versions of the motion, e.g. with electric field added. For 2-dimensional fields with slightly differing configurations - in particular, with added small field component orthogonal to the sheet, with an X-type null or with a chain of null points - two alternative methods are developed, reducing the problem either to motion in a 2-dimensional potential or to a pair of coupled oscillators.

Adiabatic invariance

Theoretical work designed to bridge the gap between celestial mechanics and the motion of charged particles in magnetic fields is presented. Attempts are made to devise a simple uninvolved method to solve adiabatic invariant motion problems. The method is illustrated by solving a problem involving the motion of a slowly perturbed harmonic oscillator.
