Hubble space telescope pointing control system simulation

A time domain simulation of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) pointing control system is described. The simulation was developed to aid in the evaluation of moving target pointing algorithms and to serve as an analysis tool. The HST pointing control system is briefly described, and the time domain simulation is discussed. A typical simulation result for moving target tracking is presented.

An alternate fine guidance sensor for the Space Telescope

Design features and the performance envelope of an alternate fine guidance sensor for the Space Telescope are delineated. A Digicon sensor, which requires focusing of a star image on the sensor, was selected as the alternate for the Koesters prism interferometer originally chosen. Optical elements scan the focal plane and are connected to star selecter servomechanisms. A 5 sq arcsec FOV serves as input, and guide stars have been identified to assure a 0.95 probability that one will always be present. The Digicon will permit pointing by 14.5 visual magnitude stars with errors kept below 0.004 arcsec. Guide star acquisition will be effected in the bang-bang mode with a state feedback in the linear area of the instrument error function. Simulations have demonstrated a satisfactory lock-on to stars down to 19th magnitude.

Space Telescope moving target tracking

This paper formulates a Space Telescope (ST) moving target tracking algorithm and evaluates a practical implementation. The algorithm is shown to be satisfactory for tracking such moving objects as the moons of Mars.

Precise pointing of space telescope using a quadrant detector

A study was done to evaluate the pointing performance of Space Telescope with a quadrant detector used as the fine guidance sensor. The detector, a quadrant digicon, has been proposed as a replacement detector should unforeseen problems develop with the present baseline interferometer design. The detector model is discussed along with the experimental data from which it was derived.

The Space Telescope alternate fine guidance sensor

A study was conducted to develop a preliminary design for an alternate fine guidance sensor system for retrofit on the NASA Space Telescope. An electrostatically focused quadrant array detector was proposed for this application. Configuration studies verified the feasibility of using this sensor in the existing fine guidance system and within the given limits on mass, power, volume, processor capability, and thermal dissipation. Space Telescope control system simulations showed the proposed system to meet the required performance specifications and to be substantially more resistant to external disturbances than the baseline system.

Autonomous attitude estimation via star sensing and pattern recognition

Results are reported on the development of an autonomous, onboard, near real time spacecraft attitude estimation technique. The approach uses CCD based star sensors to digitize relative star positions. Three microcomputers are envisioned, configured in parallel, to: (1) determine star image centroids and delete spurious images; (2) identify measured stars with stars in an onboard catalog and determine discrete attitude estimates; (3) integrate gyro rate measurements and determine optimal real time attitude estimates for use in the control system and for feedback to the star identification algorithm. Algorithms for the star identification are presented. The discrete attitude estimation algorithm recovers thermally varying interlock angles between two star sensors. The optimal state estimation process recovers rate gyro biases in addition to real time attitude estimates.
